That's confirmed: Liverpool have signed their new Mo Salah
That's confirmed: Liverpool have signed their new Mo Salah Liverpool have got themselves their Mohamed Salah replacement. That was essentially confirmed on Saturday afternoon. Mohamed Salah left Liverpool in the summer after a heartbreaking goodbye. The Egyptian goes down as one of the greatest to ever wear the shirt and one of the most prolific players in Premier League history. The surprising thing, then, is that Liverpool did not replace Salah. Not directly, anyway, as the Reds went the entire window without signing a right-winger. Now, that's not for a lack of trying. Liverpool first moved for Yan Diomande but failed to land him, before trying for Ibrahim Mabye, Ismaila Sarr and Yankuba Minteh - three players with a history of operating on that flank. All moves failed, though, and Liverpool were left without any positional replacement for an all-time great. They've instead had to try left-wingers on the right in an attempt to find someone who takes to the role. All four of Bradley Barcola, Rio Ngumoha, Cody Gakpo and Victor Munoz have played out there now. And for us, there's one clear winner. Victor Munoz is the Mo Salah replacement It was pretty clear to us that Victor Munoz looked the most at home on Liverpool's right flank. He played there in pre-season and skillset-wise, looks the most natural fit . That's because Munoz isn't the kind of winger who's looking to cut inside and create. He's instead a bit of a chaos player - someone who runs at his defender, reacting to whatever he's given to get past him. The Spaniard doesn't appear to mind whether he's going left or right, he just wants to attack players and get behind them. So with that in mind, does it really matter what side he's playing on? That's proven to hold true in competitive games, too. Munoz now has two goals for Liverpool, for instance, and both came with him playing from the right. And both, funnily enough, were assisted by Florian Wirtz. The German appears to thrive when he's got runners - and Munoz is really the only right-wing option who looks to get in behind every time. That's something else to consider, too. Barcola left, Munoz right - that's a pair of wingers who want to get behind. They stretch games and trouble defenders, creating passing options and space for everyone else. There's no other combination of wingers that does that. Gakpo and Ngumoha both prefer the ball to feet, which can lead to some static football with Alexander Isak not the most active of runners up top. So for us, Munoz on the right is the natural way to go post-Salah. He's incredibly mobile, very direct and now has a couple of goals to prove his value on that side.
