‘I’m pleased with the performance and the result’ – Bompastor reflects on Chelsea’s win against Spurs

‘I’m pleased with the performance and the result’ – Bompastor reflects on Chelsea’s win against Spurs Chelsea head coach Sonia Bompastor was delighted with her side’s 6-2 win over Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge on Sunday afternoon. Ellie Carpenter and Lauren James both scored braces while substitutes Maika Hamano and Sjoeke Nüsken were also on target for the unbeaten Blues. Speaking to the media after the match, Bompastor expressed her delight with both the result and the impact of her substitutes in the second half. “I’m pleased with the performance and the result,” Bompastor said. “I was convinced coming into this game, we would need players who would come in and bring a big impact and fresh legs. “It shows that they [substitutes] probably have clarity on what to expect from them. They have clarity on what the team is trying to achieve and also, they are coming in with confidence, which is always a positive sign for us.” “On the back of the international break, we can talk about the tactical aspects, but it was probably the most important thing to have players who impacted the game the way they did today. It’s good when you have depth in the squad, a lot of players available and the quality of the players who are coming in.” Commenting on the support at Stamford Bridge, Bompastor praised the fans for the atmosphere that they created. She said “The atmosphere today was great in the stadium, the fans were unbelievable. It helps when they can see many goals. Both teams need to play well for them to see the quality of football on the pitch. Credit to Chelsea, but also to Tottenham for that. I feel like they really enjoyed it, especially with the win at the end and the three points.” Discussing Carpenter’s role in the victory, Bompastor highlighted the defender as an important member of her side. She said “Ellie is really involved in the attacking part of our playing style. I think she’s good when we have the ball and we are attacking, but also good when she has to defend, so having a player who is able to do both, I think it’s really important. “I think Ellie, individually as a player, is able to score in the top games and the impact she brings in that outside corridor is huge for us. She’s able to score, she’s able to assist, she is improving also in her crosses, so having a player with that quality is a big help for us.” Another player who impressed Bompastor was James. The Blues boss praised the forward who took home a Player of the Match award. She said “When she is playing at this level, we are talking about a top-class player, a world-class player. She creates things for herself, by herself with the quality she has on the ball. It’s a big help when you have a player who can create from nothing. “I want to also highlight the team performance. When individuals are performing, it’s usually because the team are performing as well. The players around her are doing a job for her to express her quality on the ball.” Chelsea return to Barclays Women’s Super League action on Sunday when they travel to Crystal Palace.
