Portugal suspends, fines Cristiano Ronaldo for dramatic September walkout
The Portuguese football federation has fined and suspended all-time leading scorer Cristiano Ronaldo for an embarrassing incident during the last international break. Ronaldo, 41, left the side before the end of the international break due to his displeasure with being asked to warm-up as a substitute without eventually going into a game. The player was fined about $286 and suspended for 30 days, with Sky Sports reporting that suspension is retroactive to his walkout on September 30. Will Jorge Jesus call up Ronaldo next month? With the next international break more than 30 days from that date, the discipline rings pretty hollow — especially as the fine wouldn't be enough to buy a pair of tickets to Portugal's next home match. The discipline might, however, come from the manager. Jorge Jesus was less than impressed by Ronaldo's exit and ensuing social media hubbub. Given Ronaldo's age, every time he's uncalled upon for Portugal is one less chance to chase 1,000 career goals . The Al-Nassr forward turns 42 in February, and Portugal won three matches without Ronaldo — including the unused sub game — scoring eight goals in the process.
