Real Madrid expect influential defender to reclaim his place in the lineup soon Real Madrid’s recent game against Sevilla, where they secured a 4-1 victory, was an emotional one for Eder Militao . The Brazilian defender made his much-awaited return to the pitch after a six-month injury layoff that saw him miss the World Cup as well. He featured as a late substitute in the game. As Real Madrid gear up for an important phase of the season, there is much excitement and expectations are high on the experienced centre-back. After 181 days on the sidelines, Militao’s cameo against Sevilla was only a first step, yet his team-mates and coaching staff are already sensing the difference he makes. When fit and firing, Militao is arguably Jose Mourinho’s finest option among the senior centre-backs, as he not only provides the physical strength but also big-game experience. A timely boost before the Clasico Militao’s return works out particularly well for Real Madrid, who are gearing up for their most important match of the season so far, as they lock horns with Barcelona on October 25. His availability ramps up competition for places alongside Antonio Rudiger, Ibrahima Konate and Dean Huijsen, a welcome headache for Mourinho. Naturally, a degree of caution is required. Given the severity and length of his lay-off, Madrid will be wary of overloading him too quickly, which means he will likely get a rest for the midweek Champions League clash against RB Leipzig. But, with the first Clasico of the campaign at the Camp Nou now just days away, the prospect of Militao reclaiming a starting berth sooner rather than later is exactly the kind of lift Mourinho’s side needed.
