Van Dijk savaged by pundit over Liverpool performance
Van Dijk savaged by pundit over Liverpool performance Virgil van Dijk faces pressure as Liverpool defensive errors raise bigger questions Liverpool got the win, and in knockout terms that is usually where the conversation ends. It should not end there. A 4-3 comeback against Villarreal kept their unbeaten Champions League run intact and left them level on nine points with Paris Saint-Germain near the top of the league stage table. Fine. The bigger issue is why Liverpool needed a rescue act in the first place. Virgil van Dijk is at the centre of that discussion. The Liverpool captain made the early mistake that handed Villarreal their opening goal at Anfield, putting his side on the back foot almost immediately. When a player of his stature makes one error, you move on. When the mistakes start to stack up, it becomes a pattern. Photo IMAGO Champions League win could not hide Van Dijk concerns Liverpool did recover impressively. Alexis Mac Allister scored twice, with Ronald Araujo and Florian Wirtz also finding the net as the home side turned a two-goal deficit into a 4-3 victory. That showed character and attacking quality. It also exposed how brittle Liverpool can look when their defensive line loses structure. The criticism aimed at Van Dijk is straightforward. His lapse for the first goal was costly, and there were also questions over his role in the second, where he stepped out without the rest of the line moving with him. If he wins the ball, nobody talks about it. He did not win it, space opened up behind, and Villarreal exploited it. At that level, details decide matches. Liverpool captain must set the standard The concern here is not one isolated night. There have been reminders elsewhere. Liverpool also conceded shortly after Van Dijk came off the bench against LASK Linz, another moment that fed the sense of instability around situations he is involved in. That is why the criticism has sharpened. These are not unreasonable demands. Van Dijk is the captain, the organiser, the reference point. Leadership for a centre-back is not about shouting or pointing, it is about positioning, timing and making the game calmer for everybody around you. When that slips, the whole back line can look uncertain. “All I would tell you is that when Virgil van Dijk came off the bench against LASK, the team gave up a goal a minute later. “We started this game today, he gives assist of the week to Mikautadze, and Villarreal go up. “And it’s Virgil van Dijk who is stepping out in the second goal, the rest of his line is not stepping out with him. “Now, that could be the responsibility of [Kostas] Tsimikas and we’ll leave it at that in terms of that conversation, but he doesn’t get to the ball that he’s pressing and therefore leaves that space completely wide open to whoever is running in behind. “I just expect more leadership, more presence, fewer mistakes from the guy who’s the captain of my team and who has historically been a really good player for Liverpool. “I’m just not seeing it from him this season. “There have been too many mistakes. “Those things have to be cut out.” Contract situation adds another layer Van Dijk remains a key figure under Andoni Iraola and has started every Premier League match as Liverpool climbed to fifth in the table. That matters. So does his contract. He is now into the final year of his deal, with Galatasaray reportedly looking at a pre-contract move in January, and Ilkay Gundogan mentioned as a possible influence. Liverpool still trust him, clearly. The question is whether Van Dijk can quickly remove the errors from his game and reassert the authority that made him one of Europe’s elite defenders. The results remain solid. The margins, less so.
