Four reasons Barcelona should not panic after 2-4 defeat to PSG

Four reasons Barcelona should not panic after 2-4 defeat to PSG Barcelona’s 2-4 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League ended Hansi Flick’s remarkable start to the season, bringing an end to a run of 11 consecutive victories.  Yet, despite suffering their first loss of the campaign, the Catalans have reasons to remain optimistic as they prepare for Sunday’s El Clasico against Real Madrid at Spotify Camp Nou.  On that note, Joan Garcia produced a series of important saves, teenage defender Xavi Espart impressed against elite opposition, Lamine Yamal responded to an early mistake with a spectacular goal, and Barcelona created enough clear chances to make the contest far closer.  Indeed, PSG exposed weaknesses in Flick’s side, but the performance also offered four positives that could prove valuable in the weeks ahead. Joan Garcia strengthens Barcelona’s goalkeeping position Barcelona needed Joan Garcia to keep them competitive during a difficult opening period at the Parc des Princes, and the goalkeeper delivered several outstanding interventions .  Joan Garcia made plenty of saves against PSG. The Spaniard made impressive saves to deny Ferran Torres in the 24th and 29th minutes, Fabian Ruiz in the 29th minute and Achraf Hakimi in the 51st.  His performance helped Barcelona survive periods of intense pressure and gave his team opportunities to recover. There was room for debate over whether Garcia could have done more to stop Desire Doue’s low effort, although he had little chance of preventing the other goals. Conceding four goals will concern Flick, particularly ahead of a match against Real Madrid, but Garcia’s individual performance should not be overlooked.  Having a goalkeeper capable of producing crucial saves provides Barcelona with an important foundation as they work to improve their defensive organisation. Xavi Espart proves he can compete against elite opposition At just 19, Xavi Espart faced a formidable challenge against PSG, particularly when tasked with containing Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.  Xavi Espart scored his first Champions League goal for Barcelona. The Barcelona academy graduate did not allow the early danger to unsettle him. He defended with conviction, restricted Kvaratskhelia’s influence and also made important interventions against Achraf Hakimi and Doue.  His ability to remain composed against such dangerous attacking players was one of the clearest positives from Barcelona’s performance. Espart made an equally important contribution at the other end. His superb goal in the 55th minute brought Barcelona level, which demonstrated his attacking instincts as well as his defensive ability.  For Flick, the performance offered encouragement about the options emerging from Barcelona’s academy.  Espart still has room to develop, but his display suggested he can contribute at the highest level rather than simply gain experience from the sidelines. Barcelona have the best player in the world Lamine Yamal endured a mixed evening in Paris, but his reaction to an early mistake was encouraging.  Lamine Yamal scored a fantastic goal against PSG. However, Yamal did not allow that moment to define his performance. He continued to look for opportunities and produced a superb finish in the 79th minute to make it 2-2, briefly restoring Barcelona’s hopes of taking something from the match. Indeed, his performance was not flawless, but his willingness to keep demanding the ball and his ability to respond after an error demonstrated valuable mental resilience. Unfortunately for Barcelona, the draw lasted only three minutes before PSG regained the lead.  Yamal’s goal could not change the outcome, but his performance proved that Barcelona have the best player in the world right now. Barcelona are not devoid of creating enough chances The final scoreline does not fully reflect Barcelona’s attacking threat, as Flick’s team created several clear opportunities, but their inability to convert them consistently proved costly against a PSG side that was more clinical in front of goal. Barcelona are creating enough chances but are not finishing those. (Photo by Franco Arland/Getty Images) Barcelona registered 18 shots compared with PSG’s 22, while the French side managed 15 efforts on target against Barcelona’s five.  That difference in accuracy is one of the main reasons the hosts secured the victory. Fermin Lopez missed a one-on-one opportunity, while Gavi also failed to beat Matvei Safonov from a similar position.  The PSG goalkeeper also denied Raphinha, and the Brazilian had further opportunities that went unconverted.  He failed to get a shot away despite a promising opening early in the match, shot wide with his right foot in the second half and narrowly missed an empty-net opportunity.  Dani Olmo also came close with a powerful shot but was unable to score. Barcelona therefore have clear areas to address, especially their finishing and defensive transitions, but the chances created suggest their attacking structure can trouble top European opponents.
