Vaughan also had spells at Fulham and Charlton Athletic in an 18-year playing career. At Cambridge, he was part of the John Beck-managed side who won back-to-back promotions from Division Four, now League Two, to Division Two, now the Championship, in the 1989-90 and 1990-91 seasons. In a post on X, Huddersfield Town, where Vaughan previously served as a goalkeeping coach, said they were "saddened" by news of his passing. Vaughan also served as a goalkeeping coach at clubs including Birmingham City and Bradford City. In a tribute of their own, the Bantams said that their thoughts were, "with John's family and loved ones at this devastating time". As a player, Vaughan also enjoyed success at Preston, where he was part of the team who won the Third Division title in 1995-96. His 66 league appearances for the Lilywhites ranks only behind the 178 times he represented Cambridge between 1988 and 1993.
