Liverpool star praised for another brilliant performance against Villarreal Liverpool star praised for another brilliant performance against Villarreal Florian Wirtz’s contribution to Liverpool’s victory over Villarreal went beyond the goal that ultimately separated the teams. For David Lynch, the most encouraging feature was the confidence with which he helped change the game. Introduced at half-time during Liverpool’s 4-3 Champions League win, Wirtz brought greater fluency to the attack and continued a productive sequence of performances. Assists against LASK and Brentford were followed by a goal at Anfield, providing tangible rewards for an increasingly influential player. Speaking on Anfield Index’s Media Matters podcast, Lynch described the German’s display as “magnificent”, while explaining why the improvement was about more than the statistics. David Lynch welcomes another convincing Wirtz display “He was brilliant when he came on yesterday,” Lynch said. “I know Rio and Mac Allister will get a lot of the plaudits, but it’s probably the performance I was most pleased with personally, because of the journey he’s on at the moment.” That journey has involved promising moments followed by performances in which Wirtz struggled to impose himself. Lynch therefore viewed the Villarreal appearance as an important test of whether recent progress could be sustained. “He comes on at half-time and I’m thinking: you need to keep this going. Let’s see if you can show again what you’re all about. And I just thought he was magnificent.” The significance lay in backing up previous contributions. Liverpool need consistent influence from Wirtz, and another productive outing gave supporters reason to believe that consistency might be developing. Confidence changes Liverpool midfielder’s approach Lynch identified a greater willingness to attempt difficult passes and take responsibility in possession. “He’d started to play far too safe, I think, through concern that his form wasn’t good and he wasn’t playing well,” he explained. “I think in every game since, he’s been trying things, and the better version of Florian Wirtz is when he tries things.” For a player operating in creative areas, some unsuccessful actions are inevitable. Lynch argued that Liverpool benefit more from Wirtz attempting to unlock defences than simply preserving possession without advancing the attack. “He’s being more expansive and he’s occasionally giving the ball away, but he’s a number 10. That’s fine. That’s not a problem at all.” His assessment was that the successful actions were now moving Liverpool into positions from which they could threaten. Villarreal performance offers more than goal contribution Wirtz scored Liverpool’s fourth, a finish that became decisive when Villarreal reduced the deficit late on. However, Lynch felt much of his best work occurred before the final action of an attack. “The amount of times he gets Liverpool through the play and into more dangerous areas of the pitch, with either a nice touch to open space for himself or a lovely pass in behind someone, he’s just moving the ball really nicely.” That description captures the value of a midfielder who can connect possession with penetration. His touches and decisions helped Liverpool sustain a much stronger second-half performance. The goal provided another confidence boost, but the broader contribution suggested he was becoming more comfortable taking control of attacking situations. Brighton provides next opportunity to sustain progress Lynch remained cautious about declaring a permanent transformation after three encouraging appearances. “He could turn again, and we don’t want another false dawn. I don’t think anybody wants to get carried away.” Nevertheless, his expectations have changed. Rather than debating whether Wirtz should be left out, he now sees a player capable of making an important contribution against Brighton. “All of a sudden, you’re going into Brighton and you suddenly have this confidence that he can put in a performance and be important for Liverpool.” That is meaningful progress. Wirtz has begun combining confidence with end product, giving Liverpool a more effective creative presence. The next step is to make this level of involvement familiar rather than exceptional.
