West Ham Loan Stance Raises Questions: Should Nuno Sell The 26-Year-Old?
West Ham Loan Stance Raises Questions: Should Nuno Sell The 26-Year-Old? West Ham United have rebuilt their defensive structure since dropping into the Championship, with Nuno Espírito Santo focusing on a promotion challenge rather than individual reputations. The Hammers currently sit one point off the top of the table, while their centre-back options have settled into more defined roles. Max Kilman remains a key part of the backline, and Morato has impressed sufficiently to prompt interest in a permanent move. Konstantinos Mavropanos provides another option, leaving Nuno with less reason to rush a returning defender into his plans. That situation raises questions about Jean-Clair Todibo, whose move to France has yet to produce the regular football he needs. According to Get French Football News, citing Foot Mercato , RC Lens have no intention of cutting short the 26-year-old’s loan. West Ham sent the Frenchman to Lens for the 2026-27 campaign without including an option to buy. The agreement followed summer links with Olympique de Marseille after the Hammers suffered relegation from the Premier League. Todibo has struggled to secure a regular place since arriving in France. He has recorded around 186 minutes across all competitions, with four appearances and just two starts. His Ligue 1 record stands at three appearances and 141 minutes, alongside 10 clearances and two successful tackles from four attempts. The Frenchman’s passing accuracy remains an encouraging 95%, with 102 completed passes. However, limited involvement has prevented him from building the rhythm required for a sustained run in the side. His Champions League appearance against Club Brugge on 21 October brought further scrutiny after he played 45 minutes during a difficult outing. The former Barcelona defender still has a West Ham contract running until 2029. Should West Ham sell Todibo when his loan ends? (Photo by Julian Finney/Getty Images) Nuno should assess Todibo on his performances and physical readiness rather than reputation. The defender started 24 of his 25 appearances across all competitions for West Ham last season, including 22 league outings, so his recent struggles do not erase evidence of his previous usefulness. However, the club cannot afford to carry an expensive centre-back who offers little during a promotion campaign. Morato’s adaptation, Kilman’s established role and Mavropanos’ presence give Nuno a credible foundation without forcing Todibo back into the starting eleven. West Ham should review his progress throughout the loan before deciding on a permanent sale. If Lens continue to limit his minutes, the Hammers must establish whether another club would offer a better sporting opportunity and a sensible fee. His contract until 2029 gives the club time to negotiate, but a transfer should depend on credible interest and a valuation that protects their investment.
