Aston Villa’s £43m Winger Dilemma: Is Emery Protecting The Club? Aston Villa’s crowded options on the wings have left one summer arrival struggling to make an impression, with Unai Emery demanding greater discipline and consistency from his attacking players during a demanding 2026/27 campaign. Villa currently sit 12th in the Premier League, collecting eight points from seven matches through two wins, two draws and three defeats. Their European results tell a different story, with victories over Viking FK and Fenerbahçe encouraging as Emery balances domestic concerns with continental ambitions. The 3-1 win against Viking FK and a 6-0 victory over Fenerbahçe have highlighted the attacking quality available to the Spaniard. However, competition for places remains fierce, particularly across the wide positions, where Emery expects his players to contribute without possession as well as create chances in the final third. John McGinn and Emiliano Buendía offer work rate and technical security, while Samuel Iling-Junior gives Villa another option following the summer recruitment drive. Nicolas Jackson and Zion Suzuki have joined the wider group of additions intended to strengthen the squad for a season involving European commitments. That leaves little room for an attacker who struggles to meet Emery’s demands. Alejandro Garnacho, the 22-year-old Argentina international, has the acceleration and dribbling ability to trouble defenders, but those qualities alone won’t guarantee regular football in a system that requires disciplined positioning and defensive tracking. The Garnacho dilemma According to Pete O’Rourke of Football Insider , Villa are prepared to reconsider a permanent move for the Chelsea loanee if his performances fail to improve. His agreement reportedly contains an appearance-based purchase obligation worth £43 million, putting added importance on how frequently Emery selects him. Garnacho’s involvement has remained limited. He has three Premier League appearances so far, all from the bench, with 34 minutes played and no goals or assists. In the Champions League, the Argentine has made two appearances, recording 32 minutes, two shots and no goals or assists. He did score against Sevilla in a friendly during the international break. Former Aston Villa chief executive Keith Wyness has suggested another possibility that Villa could trigger the clause and attempt to sell Garnacho to a European club for a profit. However, that approach would depend on stronger performances and genuine interest from potential buyers. Is Emery protecting Aston Villa’s finances or making a sporting decision? BIRMINGHAM, ENGLAND – OCTOBER 21: Alejandro Garnacho of Aston Villa looks on during the UEFA Champions League 2026/27 League Phase MD3 match between Aston Villa FC and Viking FK at Villa Park on October 21, 2026 in Birmingham, England. (Photo by Carl Recine/Getty Images) Both considerations appear relevant. Emery has built his reputation on demanding clear roles, disciplined pressing and consistent work without the ball. If Garnacho cannot meet those standards in training, giving him minutes simply to advance a purchase obligation would undermine the manager’s selection principles. The financial risk matters just as much. A £43 million commitment represents substantial expenditure for a club that must balance domestic recruitment with European demands. Villa would need convincing evidence that Garnacho could become a reliable first-team contributor before accepting that obligation. Wyness’s resale proposal offers a possible alternative, but buying a player solely to sell him at a profit carries no guarantee of success. Garnacho would need to attract bidders willing to match or exceed Villa’s outlay, and his limited playing time could weaken that position. For Villa, the sensible course is to judge the winger on his performances rather than his reputation. Emery already has established options who understand his system, so Garnacho must demonstrate that his attacking threat outweighs the tactical compromises he may demand.
