Enzo Maresca could unleash a midfield masterstroke as Manchester City face Aston Villa
Enzo Maresca could unleash a midfield masterstroke as Manchester City face Aston Villa Manchester City take on Aston Villa today at Villa Park. Enzo Maresca’s side enter today’s match sitting top of the Premier League after making a flying start to the 2026-27 season. City have a perfect 21 points out of a possible 21 and have made a strong start to life under their new manager. However, they face a tough test today against Unai Emery’s Aston Villa side. Villa have won five of their past six matches in all competitions and City haven’t won in four matches at Villa Park. Looking at today’s match, the midfield battle looms as the key component of today’s game. Due to this, it could be the first time that Enzo Maresca unleashes Ayyoub Bouaddi, Elliot Anderson and Enzo Fernandez in midfield in a bid to take control of today’s match. Starting Elliot Anderson, Ayyoub Bouaddi, and Enzo Fernandez in midfield may be key for Manchester City against Aston Villa. Manchester City know today’s match will be a tough one against Aston Villa. Unai Emery is one of the elite managers in European football. His team plays for him and often gets his team up for the occasion against the top sides in the Premier League. Enzo Maresca’s side will have to be at their best to make it eight consecutive wins in the league. To do that, City will have to take control of the midfield battle at Villa Park. Starting Bouaddi, Anderson and Enzo Fernandez may help achieve this. In theory, Ayyoub Bouaddi can sit in front of Manchester City’s defence and mop up any danger. Bouaddi has the ability to read the game and win duels. Playing Bouaddi deep would push Elliot Anderson further forward. This role would suit Anderson’s strengths. With Anderson and Bouaddi behind him, Enzo Fernandez can get further forward, which is a strength of his play. Yes, Enzo Maresca would have to take Rayan Cherki out of the number ten role to facilitate this change. There is a variable in that equation which I’ll get to which could make this happen. On paper at least, a midfield trio of Bouaddi, Anderson and Enzo Fernandez may be Manchester City’s path to victory against Aston Villa today. That trio would give City the strength they need in midfield. Aston Villa do have a combative and quality midfield so perhaps today is the day when Maresca attempts to unveil his midfield masterstroke. The loss of Antoine Semenyo may open up the opportunity for Enzo Maresca to go with a different look in midfield. In my opinion, Rayan Cherki has to start against Aston Villa today. He, like Phil Foden, is in too good a form to start on the bench. Perhaps, with Antoine Semenyo sidelined, Cherki can slot in on the right wing at Villa Park. Cherki is at his best playing as a number ten. His performances indicate this. But to facilitate a Bouaddi, Anderson, and Enzo Fernandez midfield, a move would have to be made by Enzo Maresca. Perhaps starting Cherki on the right wing is the move to make. Foden could start on the left or be the odd man out. Someone would have to come out of City’s starting lineup to facilitate a strong midfield trio. Whatever the move is, an in-form player will have to start on the bench. That isn’t ideal, but it is the reality. We are yet to see Bouaddi, Elliot Anderson and Enzo Fernandez start a match together for Manchester City. That could come today. The midfield battle looms a key aspect of today’s match. Perhaps today is the day that Enzo Maresca unveils his midfield masterstroke for the first time.
