Julian Ward's top priority at Liverpool has never been clearer
Julian Ward's top priority at Liverpool has never been clearer Julian Ward has his work cut out for him in his second stint as Liverpool's sporting director. The club have spent over £650 million since winning the Premier League in 2025 but are no longer in a position to compete for the biggest trophies. Supporters will remain patient with new boss Andoni Iraola as he tries to adapt the squad to his system, but success is expected at some point after such a massive spend. That means the pressure really is on for Ward, whose first and biggest priority ahead of the winter transfer window is now becoming increasingly obvious. Ward's immediate priority is obvious Liverpool's midfield has been one of the biggest talking points of the early days of Iraola's tenure as Reds' boss. Often described as unbalanced and lacking control, it is clear that the midfield needs an addition in January. Ward and Liverpool's recruitment team are no doubt looking at suitable candidates, but the Englishman has a more pressing matter to address. Alexis Mac Allister has been the standout performer in a mostly poor Liverpool midfield this campaign, but the World Cup winner is about to enter the final 18 months of his current deal at Anfield. Five goal involvements in his opening 11 games have led to Mac Allister being hailed as Liverpool's best midfielder once again, but the 27-year-old has made it very clear he is unhappy with his contract situation. The 57-capped Argentine made public his disappointment at not being offered a new deal this summer, and rumours have swirled since that he could agitate for a move away if an agreement can't be reached. As much as adding to the midfield is a priority for Ward, making sure that the Reds don't lose one of their best midfielders for a fraction of his true value will also be incredibly important. With the transfer window closed for another two months, now is the perfect time to go back to the negotiating table with Mac Allister's representatives. Mac Allister has been one of the Reds' best performers this season, and he should be rewarded with a new deal.
