Tottenham end eight-year Stamford Bridge drought as Chelsea collapse in London derby
Tottenham end eight-year Stamford Bridge drought as Chelsea collapse in London derby Tottenham Hotspur secured a rare victory at Stamford Bridge on Saturday evening, defeating 10-man Chelsea 2-0 to register consecutive Premier League wins for the first time this season. An own goal from Mike Penders and a late Mathys Tel strike handed Roberto De Zerbi’s side their first league victory at Chelsea since April 2018. The result followed Monday’s 3-1 success over Coventry City and lifted Tottenham to 12th in the table after a difficult start to the campaign. Chelsea entered the London derby seeking a third consecutive league victory, but Xabi Alonso’s team struggled to impose themselves in torrential rain. Without Joao Pedro, the hosts lacked a focal point in attack and found it difficult to create clear opportunities. Cole Palmer threatened early with a curling effort that forced Antonin Kinsky into a diving save. Tottenham gradually established control of possession, although Mohamed Kudus failed to test Penders with an ambitious attempt. Omar Marmoush then squandered the visitors’ best first-half opportunity, shooting straight at Chelsea’s young goalkeeper from a promising position. Chelsea responded through Jordan Henderson and Pedro Neto, but Kinsky comfortably dealt with both efforts. The second half continued in similar fashion, with Tottenham enjoying possession while Chelsea struggled to create openings. Neto wasted a promising opportunity shortly after the hour mark, firing directly at Kinsky from inside the penalty area. The breakthrough eventually arrived in the 77th minute following a costly mistake from Penders. The 21-year-old, deputising for injured goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, misjudged Mateus Fernandes’ corner and punched the ball into his own net under pressure from Jan Paul van Hecke. Chelsea’s problems worsened three minutes later when Palmer received a second yellow card for a late challenge on former teammate Conor Gallagher. The England international had already been booked for barging into Fernandes during an increasingly heated encounter. Tottenham exploited their numerical advantage in the 87th minute when Tel produced an excellent individual goal. The French forward carried the ball forward from halfway, skipped past Maxence Lacroix and drilled a low shot beyond Penders. Chelsea could not respond, allowing Tottenham to secure just their second Premier League victory in 37 visits to Stamford Bridge. The defeat ended Chelsea’s six-match unbeaten home run and prevented Alonso’s side from climbing into third place. For De Zerbi, the result represents an encouraging turning point after Tottenham failed to win any of their opening six league fixtures. Spurs now have consecutive victories and renewed confidence as they attempt to climb further up the standings.
