The Catalans are monitoring the Italy international, who could become a serious option if someone like Alejandro Balde leaves Hansi Flick’s squad. His ability to operate on either flank makes him an attractive option for Barcelona, particularly given Flick’s preference for versatile defenders comfortable in possession. Meanwhile, Barça potentially making a move for Cambiaso could depend directly on the future of out-of-favour Alejandro Balde. Roma are considering a January loan move for the Spaniard with an option to buy, while Juventus have also previously shown interest in his services. That said, there have been no formal negotiations between the two clubs so far for either full-back. Would Cambiaso be a sensible replacement for Balde? Cambiaso’s versatility is the most exciting aspect of his profile, and he could provide squad depth on both flanks. His attacking instincts and willingness to advance into forward areas, whether overlapping or inverting into midfield, would suit Barça ‘s approach. Nevertheless, spending €30 million on another full-back would be justified only if Barça managed to recoup a similar amount or more from a sale like Balde’s. Hansi Flick already has Joao Cancelo and Xavi Espart, who can play on both flanks, and should not add another name for the sake of it. Although the academy graduate has struggled for minutes, he remains a young player with considerable pace and attacking potential. Allowing him to leave on loan without a purchase option would be a much better option than parting ways with him permanently. Barça should therefore assess whether signing Cambiaso would genuinely improve the squad or if they would be better off trusting Balde. It remains to be seen how Cambiaso recovers from his ankle problem and whether Barcelona make a move for him in the near future.
