Real Madrid goalkeeper Andriy Lunin makes El Clasico history after Barcelona victory

Real Madrid goalkeeper Andriy Lunin makes El Clasico history after Barcelona victory Real Madrid travelled to Barcelona knowing full well that a victory could take them closer to the Catalan giants in the La Liga title race. Los Blancos were dealt a very late blow , as it emerged that Thibaut Courtois was down with the flu and could not feature against Barça . Andriy Lunin was forced to start the big game, and he passed the test with flying colours, helping his team secure a 2-1 victory over Barça . The Ukrainian made history, becoming the first goalkeeper to win at least four of his first five El Clasico appearances . He entered the encounter with three victories and one defeat against the Catalans, but his latest appearance at the Spotify Camp Nou took that record to four wins in five matches. Lunin makes history in El Clasico It was Lunin’s first competitive appearance of the season, making the challenge even greater. Despite his lack of recent match action, the 27-year-old produced an assured performance against Barcelona. His most important intervention came in the 66th minute, when he made an outstanding one-handed save to deny Gerard Martin’s header. The stop proved crucial, keeping Madrid level after Raphinha had cancelled out Kylian Mbappe’s first-half opener. Mbappe eventually scored the winner late in the second half, securing three valuable points for Mourinho’s side. Lunin proves his value to Real Madrid Lunin’s record against Barcelona now includes victories in October 2022, January 2024, April 2024 and October 2026. His only defeat came in October 2024, when Madrid suffered a 4-0 loss at the Santiago Bernabeu. Kylian Mbappe scored the eventual winner for Real Madrid against Barcelona. Goalkeepers who spend long periods on the bench face a difficult task when suddenly called upon for major fixtures. Lunin showed that he can handle that responsibility, combining concentration with decisive shot-stopping when Madrid needed him most. Although Courtois remains the established first choice, Madrid have a goalkeeper capable of delivering in demanding circumstances. Lunin’s impressive El Clasico record is a fitting reward for his patience, and he will hope to take such chances whenever they present themselves in the future.
