Michael Carrick responds to sack claims after Man United’s defeat to Bournemouth
Michael Carrick responds to sack claims after Man United’s defeat to Bournemouth Michael Carrick Fights for Manchester United Future After Bournemouth Humbling Michael Carrick says his walk around Old Trafford after Manchester United’s 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth was not a goodbye. That is his position. The optics suggested something else. United were taken apart by a Bournemouth side that played with more clarity, more aggression and more purpose. At home, in a fixture they badly needed to stabilise, Carrick’s team looked flat and vulnerable. The omission of Bruno Fernandes and Matheus Cunha only sharpened the focus on selection, authority and what exactly this United side is supposed to be right now. After the final whistle, Carrick applauded the home support. In another context, it might have passed without comment. In this context, with pressure mounting and results deteriorating, it looked significant. Carrick insisted otherwise, saying: “It wasn’t [a farewell from me]. It was mixed emotions. I’m feeling for the players because they are going through a tough spell, some of it we can help, some of it the situation unravels and the boys are feeling it. “Mixed emotions for the supporters to respond in that way and to have the connection with the supporters, in the moment we are in is mixed emotions and I need time to digest that. I appreciate their support.” Photo: IMAGO Manchester United Pressure Builds After Bournemouth Defeat The reality is simple. Manchester United are losing games, performances are sliding and Carrick knows it. He did not try to dress it up. He said: “The situation is where we are at. We haven’t had the performances or the results. It’s a tough situation, there is no hiding from it. “What’s next, I really do not know. But I always do what’s best for this football club and I don’t change that now. I love what I do, I love the position I am in and I feel the responsibility, but we’ll have to wait an see.” That is candid and fair. It also sounds like a manager who understands the decision may no longer be his. He added: “See what happens. I’m not expecting anything. It’s just digesting today , we knew it was an important day to try and get us moving forward and we haven’t done that. “For me it’s just digesting that and the emotions at the end of the game is something I’ve not really had before. “I’ve got the energy for sure , it means so much to me. You have games to focus on and gathering the players. The responsibility of doing that I enjoy that , I love it, it’s what I’m here for.” Bournemouth Win Exposes Old Trafford Problems Bournemouth did not need any favours, but United gave them plenty anyway. The visitors were sharper in transition, better organised and far more composed. At 3-0, there was no injustice in the scoreline. It reflected the game. For United, there is a growing sense of drift. Last season’s recovery under Carrick has bought him some credit, but credit runs out quickly when the team stops functioning. This was not a narrow defeat with bad luck attached. This was a comfortable Bournemouth win at Old Trafford. Harry Maguire Points at Players After Old Trafford Loss Harry Maguire, captain for the day, did what more players should do after a result like this, he accepted responsibility. He said: “At the moment we’re not doing enough as players. “Michael turned our season on its head last year and we played brilliant football and got brilliant results. This season we haven’t performed well enough as individuals.” That is accurate. Managers carry the consequences, players often carry the blame more lightly than they should. United’s problems are bigger than one touchline figure. Even so, when results and performances collapse together, the manager is the one exposed first. Carrick says he wants to stay. The next move belongs to Manchester United.
