Real Madrid speedster puts Vinicius under pressure after statement El Clasico performance According to MARCA , Yan Diomande has given Jose Mourinho a major selection dilemma after delivering an outstanding performance in his first El Clasico , helping Real Madrid secure a 2-1 victory over Barcelona at the Spotify Camp Nou. The Ivorian winger made his presence felt at both ends of the pitch, strengthening his case for a permanent place in the team’s attack and raising questions about where Vinicius Jr. will fit when he returns. Diomande arrived in Madrid amid enormous expectations following a transfer that could cost €140 million, and his adaptation initially took time. Ten La Liga matches into the season, however, his recent performances suggest the investment is beginning to make sense. His display against Barcelona was arguably the clearest evidence yet. Direct, relentless and willing to contribute defensively, the youngster offered Mourinho far more than an attacking alternative during Vinicius’ four-match suspension. From slow start to indispensable option in Mourinho’s attack Mourinho first handed Diomande a starting opportunity against Rayo Vallecano, and the winger followed that with an impressive performance against Elche. The 19-year-old speedster then found the net against Sevilla before making another impact in the Champions League against RB Leipzig, even though he had started that European fixture on the bench with Vinicius selected instead. By the time El Clasico arrived, Diomande had built a strong case for greater responsibility . His pace, ability to attack defenders and movement into dangerous spaces made him a persistent problem for Barcelona, while his defensive contribution gave Mourinho another reason to trust him. Vinicius now faces a genuine battle to reclaim his place Diomande’s performance has made the competition for places in Real Madrid’s attack considerably more interesting. He has given Mourinho reasons to consider keeping him in the starting XI even after his teammate becomes available again. The challenge for the manager now is deciding how to accommodate Diomande alongside Vinicius, Kylian Mbappe and Arda Guler. Vinicius’ return will force the manager to make a decision, but the Ivorian has strengthened his position at exactly the right time. Performing against Barcelona under the pressure of a high-profile fixture is different from impressing in isolated league appearances, and he responded with one of his most complete displays since joining Real Madrid . Rather than looking burdened by the €140 million transfer fee, Diomande is increasingly playing with the confidence and freedom that made him such an attractive prospect.
