Celtic Star Tipped For Manchester United Move: Should O’Neill Reject A January Sale? Celtic have little reason to weaken their attack midway through a season in which domestic results remain encouraging, even as European defeats have exposed weaknesses elsewhere in Martin O’Neill’s squad. The 7-1 victory over Hearts and 2-1 win against Hibernian offered a timely response to difficult continental results. Those European setbacks make January recruitment important, but Celtic must also consider how a potential Premier League bid could affect their title ambitions and squad planning. Manchester United could provide an interesting opportunity for Celtic to test the market. Michael Carrick’s side lost 3-0 at home to Bournemouth on 25 October, extending their winless run to eight matches in all competitions. The defeat followed a 4-1 loss to Como, while Carrick’s decision to drop captain Bruno Fernandes intensified scrutiny of the manager’s position. United’s current struggles could prompt recruitment changes, although their immediate priorities remain unclear. Against that backdrop, former Arsenal and Everton winger Anders Limpar has identified a Celtic player who could attract Premier League interest. Celtic Shorts reported his comments, which appeared in the Daily Record, suggesting that several English clubs need more attacking quality. Limpar specifically named Manchester United, Liverpool and Everton as potential destinations for a forward capable of delivering goals. His recommendation concerns Benjamin Nygren, whose scoring record has attracted attention despite occasional criticism from Celtic supporters over his all-round contribution. Speaking via Daily Record, he said: “Benjamin Nygren is good enough to play in the Premier League, and you can see that he’s still knocking them in for Celtic for fun. It would be stupid for clubs in the Premier League to not buy him this summer. “Man United at the moment are struggling. Really, really struggling. Liverpool are struggling at the moment. Everton are not struggling, but they need quality forwards like Nygren. “There are a few clubs he can actually choose from that haven’t got a good winger/forward. “So, all the Premier League clubs should be looking at this guy, because he’s going to come cheap and he’s a hell of a player.” The Swedish midfielder scored 23 goals last season and has added eight during the 2026/27 campaign. Celtic signed him from FC Nordsjælland, and his contract reportedly runs until 2030. Should Celtic reject a January sale and keep Nygren? (Photo by Ian MacNicol/Getty Images) Celtic should resist any January approach unless an exceptional offer arrives. Nygren’s goals give O’Neill a valuable attacking option, and losing that output midway through a title challenge could create a problem that the winter market cannot easily solve. His defensive contribution may divide opinion, but Celtic can address that concern through midfield balance rather than surrendering their most productive attacking asset. McGregor could provide a deeper presence while other midfielders cover spaces left by Nygren’s forward runs, allowing the Swede to concentrate on attacking positions without leaving the team exposed. Manchester United’s turmoil could encourage an ambitious bid, yet Celtic hold a stronger hand with a contract running until 2030. Any sale would require enough money to fund a credible replacement without weakening the title challenge. Unless a substantial offer changes the calculation, keeping Nygren through the season makes more sense than selling cheaply in January.
