Maine Wildness unveiled: Portland’s new women’s soccer team takes shape Maine Wildness. The name itself brings a sense of wonder and intensity. In Maine, where vast landscapes collide, a growing soccer scene is taking shape. On October 15, 2026, the name Maine Wildness was unveiled, and Mainers have another women’s soccer team to welcome with open arms. Following the excitement around recent ventures in the men’s game, Maine wanted more. After months of town halls and community meetings, Portland Hearts of Pine now has a sister team. Maine Wildness will kick off in May 2027, hosting home matches at Fitzpatrick Stadium in Portland. The excitement was already building before the unveiling. In June, all 5,000 inaugural season-ticket deposits sold out in less than an hour , even though the team had yet to reveal its name, crest, or roster. Brunswick resident Nicole Vinal, a season-ticket holder for both clubs, summed up her reaction to the new identity when she told the Portland Press Herald , “It’s perfect. All of it.” The meaning behind Maine Wildness So what’s in a name? What really encompasses this wildness? The name draws inspiration from Walden , where Henry David Thoreau wrote, “We need the tonic of wildness.” The crest feels crafted for Maine’s wilderness. It features flowing waters, local wildflowers, Mount Katahdin in the distance, and the Dirigo Heart. With a design rooted in the state, this women’s team is ready to blaze a trail. Portland-based designer Pame Chévez brought the crest to life with organic, hand-drawn details. Even the lettering draws inspiration from hand-carved trail markers found throughout Maine’s backcountry, giving the design a rugged, personal touch that fits the team’s name. Maine Wildness is expected to compete in the USL W League’s Northeast Division, though the final 2027 alignment hasn’t been announced. The team is set to announce additional information about its coaching staff, players, and schedule in the coming months. Because the USL W League is a summer circuit built for pre-professional athletes, the new club gives collegiate players a chance to develop their game while maintaining their eligibility. It’s exactly the kind of homegrown pipeline Maine needs to help its top soccer talent reach the next level. All eyes will be on Maine as the state’s soccer scene continues to awaken.
