Liverpool starlet discusses opportunity to seize chance Trey Nyoni Taking His Chance as Andoni Iraola Leans on Liverpool Youth Liverpool went into the 2026-27 season with a clear issue in midfield depth and no new signing to paper over it. That left Andoni Iraola with a choice, trust the same players until they burned out, or use what was already in front of him. Trey Nyoni has benefited from that reality, and more importantly, he has justified it. The 19-year-old academy midfielder has already made nine appearances in all competitions and played 373 minutes. That is serious involvement for a teenager at a club chasing silverware on multiple fronts. Projected across the season, it puts him in the 1,500 to 2,000-minute range. For a player who began the campaign on the edge of the first-team picture, that tells you plenty. Nyoni summed up his approach clearly: “My motive has always just been, that I’m on the pitch for a minute, five minutes, 10 minutes, 90 minutes, I just try to make the most out of the minutes I get,” Nyoni said ahead of Wednesday’s League Cup tie against Chelsea, which he is widely expected to start. Trey Nyoni Grabs Liverpool Opportunity That is the right answer, but in this case the numbers back it up. Nyoni has seen the pitch in 75% of Liverpool’s matches so far. He has gone from promising option to active squad contributor. That matters because Liverpool’s margin for error is slim. A thin squad means minutes are available, though only for players capable of handling them. Photo: IMAGO Nyoni appears comfortable with the increased workload. As he explained, “But I think in the last few weeks obviously I’ve had a lot of exposure, which has been good for me. It’s something different, playing a lot of minutes within a short space of time, but it has been really good.” The wording is youthful, the point is simple. He is adapting quickly. Andoni Iraola Rotation Bringing Youth Into Focus Iraola has not stopped with Nyoni. Liverpool have also handed significant action to Rio Ngumoha and Lewis Koumas. That is partly philosophy, partly necessity. Liverpool want to compete in four competitions, and they do not have the luxury of ignoring the academy when depth is stretched across several positions. This is where the manager earns his money. Rotation is easy to talk about and harder to execute when results matter. Iraola has accepted that younger players must contribute, and he has given them enough trust to settle rather than simply survive. Liverpool Midfield Depth Remains a Live Issue Nyoni also pointed to the internal standard required at the club. “For me it’s positive to see the younger players,” Nyoni added. “Obviously we need to stick together, help each other as much as possible. We know that being here, it’s not easy, there’s a lot of world-class players here. They’re going to push us every day. “I think having that allows us to keep pushing on and keep progressing. Every time we go on the pitch, I think none of us are really nervous, I think we all go out there and give 100%. That’s what’s important.” That is the challenge and the opportunity. Liverpool still need more from the squad as a whole, especially in midfield, but Nyoni has already done the first part. He has turned a shortage into an opening, and an opening into a role.
