Real Madrid defender silences critics with starring display against Barcelona There was a lot at stake when Real Madrid visited Barcelona this past weekend, including prestige as well as the La Liga title race. The stakes were arguably higher for the Real Madrid defence, which has fallen prey to Barcelona’s outstanding attack multiple times in the recent past. Naturally, all eyes were on the Real Madrid backline, and especially Dean Huijsen, who has built a reputation of sorts for faltering against big teams. But that wasn’t the case against Barcelona. Huijsen’s performance vs Barcelona As reported by MARCA , Huijsen has truly silenced the critics pointing at his lack of performance against big teams by pulling off a brilliant display vs Barcelona. Huijsen has been mightily impressive so far. The numbers back up the eye test, with Huijsen finishing the game with 10 clearances, 16 defensive actions and four blocks. More importantly, he was excellent with the ball. The centre-back completed 37 of his 45 passes at 83% accuracy, seven of which broke lines, and his composure on the ball helped Real Madrid play through Barcelona’s intense press at key moments. Difficult outings at the Metropolitano in both 2025 and 2026, coupled with an inconsistent debut campaign that cost him a World Cup place, had fuelled genuine doubts about his big-game temperament. Thanks to this performance, Huijsen has firmly hit back at his critics. Mourinho’s role in Huijsen’s transformation Mourinho and Huijsen have worked together in the past. The Portuguese has placed clear demands on the centre-back, prioritising defensive solidity and aggression without stripping away the ball-playing qualities that make him so highly rated. Huijsen looks increasingly comfortable in a system built on concentration, intensity and competing on every single play. There is still room for growth, but he is beginning to translate his natural talent into consistent, complete performances. That improved form also strengthens his standing within the squad. With Eder Militao still working back to full fitness, the partnership of Ibrahima Konate and Huijsen is emerging as Mourinho’s preferred pairing. The Clasico validated that choice and handed the Spaniard the perfect platform to cement his place heading into an important phase of the season.
