Leeds United Face £2.6m Midfield Battle: Is Farke Right To Push Ahead?
Leeds United Face £2.6m Midfield Battle: Is Farke Right To Push Ahead? Leeds United have collected 11 points from eight Premier League matches this season, winning twice, drawing five times and losing once. Daniel Farke’s side have scored nine goals and conceded six, but five draws highlight the need to turn disciplined performances into more victories, particularly when matches demand greater control in midfield. Their midfield already offers several options. Captain Ethan Ampadu provides defensive cover, Ilia Gruev brings energy, while Anton Stach adds physical presence. Ao Tanaka and Sean Longstaff give Farke further alternatives, although the demands of a Premier League campaign leave little room for complacency over squad depth. With Leeds balancing domestic fixtures and player fitness, another defensive midfielder could give Farke greater flexibility. A player who can recover possession, cover ground and protect the back four would help the existing options manage the workload without forcing the manager to compromise his preferred combinations. Leeds United face competition for a January midfield target According to Sport Witness , citing reporting from Africa Foot, Leeds have opened discussions over Maccabi Tel Aviv midfielder Issouf Sissokho. The report says the Whites initiated contact on October 20 and are preparing an offer for January, but Levante and Sporting Braga have entered the race. Levante have reportedly contacted the 24-year-old Malian’s agent and are preparing a bid worth around £2.6 million. Transfermarkt values Sissokho at approximately £1.5 million. His contract runs until 2027, with an option for another year, and he joined Maccabi as a free agent in 2024 after playing for Bordeaux. He has since made 97 appearances for the Israeli club. Should Leeds United pay above market value for Sissokho? (Photo by David Balogh/Getty Images) Sissokho could offer useful protection in front of the defence. He has 14 appearances and 1,186 minutes across competitions this season, alongside one goal and a 7.55 average FOTMob rating. His European experience also gives Leeds a better picture of his ability than a signing arriving directly from a less familiar league. However, Leeds shouldn’t enter a bidding contest simply because Levante have moved first. Ampadu, Gruev and Stach already provide credible options, so recruitment staff must establish whether Sissokho offers a distinct tactical benefit. His mobility and defensive work would need to improve the midfield balance, rather than simply increase the number of players competing for minutes. A fee of around £2.6 million could represent sensible business if Leeds believe he can challenge for a regular role. Yet the club must also consider wages, contract length and adaptation to English football. If Farke sees Sissokho as a genuine solution to the midfield’s defensive demands, the fee could be justified; if he would serve only as emergency cover, Leeds should resist a bidding war.
