Barcelona loan watch: Ronald Araujo delivers yet another standout display in Chelsea win Ronald Araujo delivered another commanding defensive performance for Liverpool against Chelsea in the League Cup, strengthening his case for a permanent stay in England while leaving Barcelona facing uncertainty over the defender’s long-term future. The Uruguayan has made an encouraging impression during his loan spell, having recently earned player of the match recognition following Liverpool’s league victory over Brighton.  His latest display offered further evidence of his defensive value, with his contribution extending beyond the numbers on the scoresheet. Timing his run like a centre-forward, Araujo launched himself at a header that looked capable of producing a goal, only for goalkeeper Mike Penders to deny him with an excellent save. His defensive statistics offered a striking illustration of his influence.  Araujo recorded 10 clearances against Chelsea, while every other Liverpool defender combined managed just one.  The figures alone explain how heavily Liverpool relied on him to deal with the visitors’ attacking threat. Liverpool hold €55 million option as Barcelona await decision Araujo’s performances have added weight to the possibility of a permanent transfer.  Araujo’s loan as an option of permanent transfer. For Barcelona, that uncertainty leaves an important question over what happens when the loan arrangement reaches its conclusion.  Araujo remains under contract with the Catalan club, so Liverpool’s intentions will play a major role in determining whether he stays in England or returns to Spain. A fee of that size would also represent a significant decision for Liverpool, while Barcelona must also consider their defensive plans and the player’s future role should he return.
