Former Inter Milan chief opens up on Mourinho joining Real Madrid in 2010: ‘What could I do?’ Jose Mourinho’s return to Real Madrid has naturally brought plenty of reflection on the Portuguese’s career, including his first departure for the Bernabeu more than a decade ago. Few are better placed to speak on that chapter than Massimo Moratti, the man who was Inter Milan president when Mourinho left Italy for the Spanish capital. In a recent interview, the Moratti opened up about Mourinho’s departure to Real Madrid. Moratti on Mourinho’s 2010 exit Speaking to AS (h/t Mundo Deportivo ), Moratti said he has no bitterness over Real Madrid prising Mourinho away at the end of the 2009-10 campaign, despite the circumstances. And so it was,” he said, adding that the move was always one the Portuguese craved. The former Inter chief insisted his relationship with the Spanish giants remained warm throughout, even as they swooped for his prized manager. “Exceptional, always. No problems. The relationship we had was healthy, pleasant. Yes, even when they signed Mourinho. I’m a calm person who loves football in all its aspects. “It’s a sport where anything can happen, and that’s what makes it great. You have to put things in perspective. He wanted to leave and he did. He’s the same Mou,” he added. Moratti on Mourinho’s personality Moratti also offered his view on whether age and experience have changed Mourinho. “I respect Mourinho. I know his character, and that’s difficult to change. His obstinacy for victory is always recognizable. Great personality, determination. Moratti said Mourinho hasn’t changed but the game has changed. (Photo by Angel Martinez/Getty Images) “The thing is, football has changed, it’s becoming increasingly complex. Full of new developments, modern ideas… You have to adapt, but Mou is the same ,” he said. The Italian went on to argue that Mourinho’s man-management skills are more valuable than ever in the modern game. “I should add that footballers today aren’t what they used to be. The sense of belonging is fragile. There’s certainly less commitment to a club. Managing all of that isn’t easy. “In that sense, Mourinho is one of the best prepared to manage a group magnificently, to instill a winning mentality in them,” he added. Finally, Moratti offered his praise to Mourinho, who has also received greetings from former Real Madrid players like Toni Kroos for his excellent work this season. “I have no doubt. I insist on this because I know him. He’s the best coach I ever had at Inter. I’m very close to him. What he did here in two years was the best,” he concluded.
