‘We have to back this up’ – Arsenal must keep building says Slegers

‘We have to back this up’ – Arsenal must keep building says Slegers Arsenal head coach Renée Slegers says that her side need to keep building on their recent upturn in results. The Gunners won just two of their first eight matches this season, but they have since recorded back-to-back victories in the past week. When speaking to the media ahead of this weekend’s Barclays Women’s Super League fixture against Aston Villa, Slegers said that recent results have lifted the mood, but it is important to keep building. “Of course, it’s lighter [after two wins],” Slegers said. “You work so hard for the rewards and we are here to win. We’ve done that twice now, which is great, but we have to back this up as well. We said it after Spurs in the North London derby and it’s the exact same now. It’s good, it’s two good wins. It was Arsenal, this was us last night and now, we have to back it up with the next game coming up against Villa.” Latest opponents Aston Villa are in good form and Slegers is looking forward to the test that will be provided by the Midlands side. She said “With Brian [Sørensen], they’ve had a really good start; I think it’s four wins and a draw. They won last night through penalties. “We remember the game last year, how it was difficult at Emirates for us at home. The away game was good, it was dominant. We have to be prepared, we have to be humble. “What they’re going to do, it’s always a guessing game. Of course, they’re in a transition now and they’ve changed their system. Let’s see what they do against us. Very often it happens that teams do something different against us. Let’s see what their game plan is. We have to focus on ourselves and keep building on our last performance.” Four of Arsenal’s next six games are on home soil and Slegers is looking forward to many opportunities to play in-front of the club’s fans. She said “We love to play at home for the fans and from a travelling perspective. That said, our travelling is always smooth and our facilities are top. We have to of course travel to Barcelona, but there are a lot of home games and we love it. “We’ll be at Emirates Stadium this weekend, the away section is sold out and our fans were so loud again yesterday which we wanted to really encourage and energise in the first 20 minutes of the game. The atmosphere is fantastic at Boreham Wood, but we can’t wait to play again at Emirates Stadium in front of our fans.” Arsenal’s Barclays Women’s Super League fixture against Aston Villa kicks-off at 12pm on Sunday afternoon.
