Virgil van Dijk aims jibe at Chelsea star after Carabao Cup win Virgil van Dijk Shrugs Off Emmanuel Emegha Incident After Liverpool Edge Chelsea Football is full of petty nonsense. Most of it gets forgotten within minutes. This one stood out because it made so little sense. During Liverpool’s Carabao Cup fourth-round tie with Chelsea at Anfield, Virgil van Dijk found himself on the receiving end of a strange shove from Emmanuel Emegha. The Chelsea substitute had only just entered the match for his senior debut when he charged into the Liverpool captain well after the ball had gone. There was no real football reason for it. Van Dijk had already played the ball back to Trey Nyoni. The phase had moved on. Emegha still decided to sprint in and send him to the turf. It was late, needless and, above all, odd. Van Dijk response says plenty Van Dijk was asked about it afterwards and had no interest in turning it into a drama. His answer [via the Liverpool Echo ] was short, pointed and mildly sarcastic: “Ask him. I don’t know. Maybe he’s trying to get into the national team as well and trying this way. I don’t know. You have to ask him. When he comes by, just ask him.” That is about right. If Emegha had a grievance, nobody else could see it. There had been no obvious confrontation beforehand, no sequence of fouls, no simmering feud. Just a substitute arriving and deciding that barging into one of the game’s most established centre-backs was a good use of his evening. Photo: IMAGO Emmanuel Emegha moment lacked logic This sort of thing usually has an explanation, however flimsy. A late tackle, a verbal exchange, a player trying to set a tone. Here, there was very little. Emegha had enough time and distance to stop. He did not. That leaves everyone trying to work out the point of it. Van Dijk looked irritated for a moment, then largely bemused. Fair enough. There was little else to be. Liverpool captain had final say In the end, the only part that mattered was the result. Liverpool came through on penalties, and Van Dijk’s contribution before going off was solid and controlled, including a key interception to stop Danny Welbeck. Emegha got a moment of attention. Van Dijk got the win. That is usually how these things should be measured.
