La Liga defender begins Spanish passport process that could give Barcelona major edge in transfer pursuit

La Liga defender begins Spanish passport process that could give Barcelona major edge in transfer pursuit Barcelona have received a potentially significant boost in their pursuit of Real Betis defender Natan, with the Brazilian centre-back beginning the process of obtaining Spanish citizenship.  According to reports from MARCA , the development could make a potential January transfer more straightforward for the Catalan club, as the 25-year-old would no longer occupy a non-EU player slot once his Spanish nationality is officially granted. The development comes as Barcelona step up their search for a new centre-back ahead of the January 2027 transfer window.  Consecutive defeats against Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid have increased concerns about Hansi Flick’s defensive options , prompting Deco to examine several possibilities. On that note, Natan has emerged as an attractive candidate because of his La Liga experience, defensive profile and potentially favourable availability compared with some of Barcelona’s more expensive targets.  However, convincing Real Betis to sanction his departure could prove considerably more difficult. Natan’s Spanish passport could help Barcelona transfer plans Barcelona’s interest in Natan is not new, but his nationality situation could make him an even more appealing option for the club’s sporting department. The Brazilian defender has started the process of obtaining Spanish citizenship, which would allow him to be registered as an EU player once the application is approved.  This is particularly relevant for Barcelona because non-EU registration slots are an important consideration when planning their squad and evaluating overseas recruits. His name has consequently gained prominence as Deco considers alternatives for the January window.  Recent reports have also identified Josko Gvardiol, Alessandro Bastoni and Lisandro Martinez among the defenders being monitored by Barcelona. Real Betis demand could complicate Barcelona transfer While Natan’s passport process could improve his attractiveness from a squad-planning perspective, the financial side of the operation remains a significant concern. Real Betis consider the Brazilian an important part of their defensive structure, and his contract runs until June 2030.  The Andalusian club is therefore in a strong negotiating position and has little reason to accept an offer that falls below their valuation. Transfer journalist Matteo Moretto has also highlighted the financial obstacle Barcelona could encounter if they attempt to bring the defender to Camp Nou.  Discussing Betis’ likely position in negotiations, he warned: “Betis would ask for a lot of money.” Natan is among several defenders Barcelona are monitoring. Deco faces important decision Barcelona’s renewed interest in Natan is a reflection of the club’s intention to address their defensive depth rather than rely entirely on their existing options for the remainder of the campaign. Hansi Flick wants a centre-back capable of contributing immediately, while Deco needs to identify a financially realistic candidate who fits the manager’s tactical requirements.  Natan’s familiarity with La Liga could reduce the adaptation period, while his left-footed profile provides another option in central defence. There is also an existing connection between the player’s representatives and Barcelona.  His agent, Andre Cury, has previously acknowledged the Catalan club’s interest, although earlier discussions did not result in a formal transfer offer. Hence, the next step will be determining whether Barcelona are prepared to meet Betis’ financial expectations.  The Spanish passport process could make Natan a more convenient target, but it will not reduce the transfer fee demanded by his current club.
