"You Lack Information" - Enzo Maresca Hints at Ongoing Chelsea Red Card Problem
"You Lack Information" - Enzo Maresca Hints at Ongoing Chelsea Red Card Problem Man City's expectations for the 2026/27 season? The Etihad Stadium's Italian head coach has been at the centre of a number of big decisions made regarding his recent Manchester City line-ups and in-game substitution choices of late. Most notably, at Villa Park during the club's 2-1 defeat to Unai Emery's Aston Villa side, both Marc Guehi and Rayan Cherki were withdrawn at the half-time interval with Manchester City trailing. In midweek, with Brighton & Hove Albion leading City by a 1-2 scoreline in the Carabao Cup fourth round, Enzo Maresca would bring on Jeremy Doku to replace Allan Elias on the hour mark of the cup clash. On the hour mark in Porto in the UEFA Champions League, Maresca would then make a double change as Iliman Ndiaye and Elliot Anderson replaced Antoine Semenyo and Rayan Cherki before City would go on to win the game 0-2. Now, speaking to reporters ahead of Manchester City's penultimate Premier League test before the November international break, manager Enzo Maresca has been quizzed on his approach towards making early substitutions in recent matches. Having recently pointed out that some of his alterations stemmed from players being on yellow cards and risking further referee punishment, Maresca was keen to point out that tactical instructions have also been at the heart of some of his choices. "Not always it has been for yellow cards. Sometimes it has been because I didn't like what I see, so I changed," said Maresca on Friday afternoon. The 46-year-old continued, "For instance, I think the Liverpool game, after the red card for them, we had Nico O'Reilly on a yellow card and immediately we changed him. Yes, that game was because of the yellow card. "But it's happened more times that we changed players not because they are on a yellow card. It's because I don't like what I see." It was later pointed out to Enzo Maresca that during his time at Chelsea and last season as a whole, the Stamford Bridge club received plenty of red cards, and whether that had become an issue for him or that team. In response, the Italian coach sought clarity as to whether the reporter was referring to his tenure at Chelsea or after he had left the club, and when it was pointed out it was regarding his time in West London, Maresca said, "And when I left. "You lack information. When I was there, and when I left. (So it wasn't an issue?) I don't think so." Having defeated Brighton & Hove Albion in the Carabao Cup to reach a quarter-final clash with League One side Bradford City on Wednesday night, Manchester City welcome the Seagulls to the Etihad Stadium once again this weekend. Fabian Hurzeler's side posed a significant test to City's defence of their League Cup title in domestic cup action, leading the tie on two occasions before only being denied by the Sky Blues through a penalty shoot-out. The hero that night was Geronimo Rulli, but there is unlikely to be any place for the Argentina international in Manchester City's starting line-up for a second consecutive game, with Enzo Maresca making it clear that the 34-year-old is a firm back-up choice goalkeeper at the club. Having joined Manchester City for a low-cost sum during the summer transfer window, replacing James Trafford in light of his £40 million to Leeds United , Maresca is understood to have made clear to Rulli that he would act as understudy to Gianluigi Donnarumma. And while the Italy international captain has faced criticism for some of his performances and individual errors of late, the Manchester City manager is keen to put total faith in him for the long-term future.
