Germany icon Lothar Matthaus launches scathing attack on Real Madrid star: ‘He is the problem’ Real Madrid have experienced a significant improvement under Jose Mourinho in recent weeks, and this has coincided with Vinicius Jr.’s absence. The Brazilian missed the 2-1 Clasico victory over Barcelona through suspension and still has two more La Liga games to serve before he returns to action. Now, speaking to German publication BILD, former Ballon d’Or winner Lothar Matthaus believes Vinicius is actually damaging Madrid’s progress. Matthaus believes Real Madrid perform better without Vinicius The German legend launched an extraordinary criticism of the Brazilian star, questioning his attitude. “I’m curious to see what Real Madrid will do with Vinicius Junior. The team functions better without him,” Matthaus declared (h/t Diario AS ). “He is a troublemaker. He is difficult, and he is not good for the team. His entire public image is damaging.” The German went even further, welcoming Vinicius’ 17th-place finish in the 2026 Ballon d’Or rankings. Vinicius Jr. has had a difficult start to the new season. Kane is a gentleman, and Vinicius is not,” he explained. Matthaus then delivered his strongest criticism. “The problem at Real Madrid is Vinicius Junior. When he isn’t there, the team functions better. They are more disciplined, everyone supports each other, and they are united.” “With him, there is an enormous ego, and his entire body language damages the team and the club.” Matthaus urges Mourinho to take strict action The former Germany captain urged the Portuguese manager to take decisive action regarding Vinicius Jr. “I hope, for Real Madrid’s sake, that the president eventually takes action, either reprimanding him or having Mourinho leave him on the bench,” he said. Matthaus did not hold back at all throughout the exchange, making his feelings about the Real Madrid star crystal clear. Madrid must help Vinicius get back to his best. Los Blancos have the South American star to thank for their last two Champions League triumphs, with Vinicius scoring the winner in both games. His explosive dribbling and ability to change matches remain invaluable assets that a dip in form cannot take away from him. While Mourinho’s team look more balanced, especially defensively, without Vinicius, leaving him out is not the solution. Mourinho has built his reputation on finding systems that allow his star players to thrive. He remains completely focused on helping the Brazilian star rediscover his best form, and it remains to be seen how Vinicius returns after serving his suspension.
