Liverpool's next great Argentine star, rivals Kevin De Bruyne and Nico Paz
Liverpool's next great Argentine star, rivals Kevin De Bruyne and Nico Paz Liverpool are on the hunt for forwards still. We think that could lead them to their next great Argentine star - rivalling Nico Paz. Liverpool have spent an incredible amount on their attack over the last two summer transfer windows. More than they've ever spent before. In fact, it's got to be close to rivalling the amount they'd spent in every single preceding window. And yet, things aren't finished. Liverpool's attack is lopsided, with zero left-footed players or even players who naturally operate from the right-wing. We've seen good performances on that flank, of course. Victor Munoz, Bradley Barcola and Rio Ngumoha have all looked good on the right. Cody Gakpo has proven a matchwinner from that side, too. But it's not the natural position for any of them. It means Liverpool's point of attack isn't particularly varied: they cut in from the left and hit the byline from the right. That's literally how it goes in every single game. So we do expect them to make some sort of move for a left-footed forward in 2027, even if it's not the no.1 priority. Matias Soulé is absolutely one to watch Liverpool ran into a problem when replacing Mohamed Salah in the summer. The market on the right-hand side was rotten , with absolutely no sure things actually available. That led us to highlight Matias Soulé, who was thought to be available from AS Roma. The Argentine just about stood out in our Value Adder model , looking like arguably the best of the bad bunch and the most likely to kick on a level this season. So that was the gamble with Soulé. Not the finished article, may be a relatively average top-flight player but if he improves as it looks like he might, there's a fantastic player in there. And importantly, one who Liverpool could really use. Well, it looks like he did indeed kick on. Soulé has had a really strong start to the season with Roma - one goal and three assists in Serie A so far. But those little numbers aren't the headline here. Soulé has an argument for being the best dribbler in Serie A this season. He's currently sixth for dribbles per 90 minutes but he has a considerably higher success rate (69 per cent) than anyone above him. Only Lecce's Amar Fatah comes close - he's second for dribbles per 90 and his success rate of 62 per cent is at least within 10 per cent of Soulé. No one else in that top eight gets higher than 55 per cent. That's only part of it, though. Dribbling is nice but what are you doing afterwards? Well, Soulé typically looks to break through the lines with a pass and he's in truly elite company for this right now. He's averaged 10.2 line-breaking passes per 90 minutes. This is a great figure for an attacking player but it's his totals for the season that perhaps catch the eye. Soulé has played 67 such passes and the only other attacking players to match that are Nico Paz (69) and Kevin De Bruyne (70). So that's the kind of company the Argentine is keeping. Paz is perhaps the most wanted player in football right now, while De Bruyne is simply one of the greatest player of line-breaking passes the game has ever seen. It really feels as though Soulé has clicked to another level this season, becoming a true force in attack that teams struggle to defend. That's exactly what Liverpool need in order to improve their point of attack going forward - and we think the 23-year-old is worth a real look.
