Man Utd held to goalless draw at Everton

Despite a good run of results, Eva Olid's United side are yet to fully fire offensively in the Women's Super League and were mostly neutralised by Scott Phelan's well-organised Everton team. Norway striker Elisabeth Terland came close to a late United winner, latching on to Jess Park's through ball with 15 minutes left but she was denied by a fine save from Courtney Brosnan. At the other end, Everton's Ornella Vignola had earlier passed up two decent opportunities when she shot straight at Phallon Tullis-Joyce. Olid has found her attacking formula in the new-look League Cup, with United scoring 22 goals in four matches, albeit three of those games coming against lower-league opposition. However, with just nine WSL goals so far this season, the lowest through seven games in United's history, it was perhaps unsurprising that Everton would prove tough opponents. Since Phelan took charge in January, only Arsenal and Chelsea have kept more clean sheets and their combination of pressing and a high defensive line nullified the visitors. It is at the other end where Everton are less effective with recalled Dutch striker Rosa van Gool isolated for much of the 90 minutes. The result leaves United four points off third place and the Champions League qualification spots. That berth is currently occupied by London City Lionesses, who host champions Manchester City in Sunday's blockbuster Women's Super League match (12:00 GMT).
