Three Lions captain Harry Kane, who became the first English player in 25 years to win the Ballon d'Or in midweek, led the line for Bayern but missed a penalty and was unable to get on the scoresheet. Another Englishman, Dortmund's Jobe Bellingham - brother of Real Madrid's Jude - thought he had struck the first blow when he turned the ball past Jonas Urbig. But his goal was chalked off because Carney Chukwuemeka had fouled the Bayern goalkeeper. Minutes later, Bayern's Konrad Laimer opened the scoring in Der Klassiker when he surged up the pitch and knocked in a rebound after having an initial effort saved. Kane nearly added a second from the spot early in the second half but sent the penalty onto the crossbar. That gave Dortmund a chance to get back into the game, and Serhou Guirassy equalised when he rifled a low effort past Urbig.
