Karlsruhe’s Maximilian Senft reflects on Frank Schmidt coaching documentary that inspired his career

Karlsruhe’s Maximilian Senft reflects on Frank Schmidt coaching documentary that inspired his career Karlsruher SC head coach Maximilian Senft celebrated an especially meaningful victory on Saturday evening. Following his team’s hard-fought 2-1 win over 1. FC Heidenheim, the Austrian trainer revealed that opposing coach Frank Schmidt had been one of the figures who inspired him to pursue a career in football management. Speaking at the post-match press conference at the Wildparkstadion, Senft explained that he had been influenced by Schmidt’s appearance in the acclaimed 2013 German football documentary Trainer! , directed by filmmaker Aljoscha Pause. The revelation added an unusual personal dimension to an important evening for Karlsruhe. Senft’s team had climbed out of the relegation zone with a deserved victory over Heidenheim , securing only their third league win of the campaign. Senft recalls how Frank Schmidt inspired him Senft addressed his counterpart directly toward the end of his opening statement, after reflecting on Karlsruhe’s performance and the significance of the three points. “Frank, I’d like to wish you a safe journey home,” Senft began before sharing a personal recollection. “Just on a personal note, I mentioned this before the match as well. I started my coaching career approximately ten years ago. I don’t know how many of you are familiar with the film Trainer! , but Frank was one of the main protagonists.” “He was one of the first coaching personalities who inspired me along my journey,” Senft continued. “So, irrespective of the result, this was a very special match for me today. And, of course, I’m very happy for our team that we managed to win it.” The remarks produced a touching moment at the press conference. Schmidt, who had remained largely stone-faced and emotionless throughout the proceedings, briefly broke from his otherwise impassive demeanour. The Heidenheim coach offered a half-smile and patted his younger counterpart on the back in acknowledgement of the tribute. It was a small gesture, but one that underscored the personal significance of Senft’s remarks. The documentary that inspired Senft Released in June 2013, Aljoscha Pause’s Trainer! offered an intimate examination of the demands, pressures, and everyday realities of professional football management in Germany. The documentary followed three young coaches across the 2012/13 season: Frank Schmidt at 1. FC Heidenheim, André Schubert at FC St. Pauli, and Stephan Schmidt at SC Paderborn. At the time, the three men were navigating the very different challenges of coaching in Germany’s second and third divisions. Their struggles provided the filmmaker with an opportunity to examine the profession beyond the glamorous surroundings of the Bundesliga’s established elite. The film documented how managers attempted to motivate their players, cope with disappointing performances, and reconcile their own professional ambitions with the considerable expectations placed upon them. Produced in cooperation with German public broadcaster WDR , the documentary was released in a feature-length version running approximately 139 minutes. It received considerable critical acclaim for providing an unusually detailed and personal portrait of football coaching. For the young Senft, the film evidently offered more than an entertaining look behind the scenes. It introduced him to coaching personalities whose careers and working methods would help shape his own professional ambitions. Schmidt’s appearance was particularly interesting in retrospect. When the documentary was filmed, Heidenheim were competing in the 3. Liga, several years removed from the Bundesliga. Schmidt was already establishing the principles and working culture that would eventually help the club rise through the German football pyramid. The subsequent transformation of Heidenheim into a Bundesliga club only adds weight to the influence Schmidt’s example could have had on aspiring young coaches. Senft earns needed victory over one of his early inspirations Saturday’s encounter provided an intriguing meeting between two coaches at very different stages of their careers. Senft’s own journey began in Austrian lower-league football. He subsequently worked in analytical and assistant coaching positions at Austria Wien and Wolfsberger AC before accompanying Gerhard Struber to English Championship side Barnsley in 2019. His development also included a spell coaching FC Südburgenland in the Austrian women’s Bundesliga. In 2022, Senft joined SV Ried to coach the club’s reserve team. He was promoted to head coach of the senior side in March 2023 and remained in charge despite relegation from the Austrian Bundesliga at the end of that campaign. The decision ultimately paid dividends. Senft guided Ried back to the top flight as second-division champions in 2024/25 before establishing the promoted club in Austria’s Bundesliga. That success earned him the opportunity to take charge of Karlsruher SC in the summer of 2026. The appointment nevertheless presented considerable challenges. Senft succeeded Christian Eichner, a deeply established figure at the Wildpark who had served as KSC head coach for approximately six-and-a-half years and maintained a connection with the club stretching back through his playing and coaching careers. Replacing a figure so closely associated with the club was never likely to be straightforward. Senft’s opening months in Germany have proved particularly difficult. Karlsruhe entered Saturday’s encounter at the bottom of the 2. Bundesliga table, having managed only two victories from their opening nine league fixtures. The win over Heidenheim therefore represented more than a personally satisfying occasion for Senft. It offered an important opportunity to establish some momentum and relieve the pressure surrounding his team’s difficult start. Karlsruhe responded with an energetic performance, taking the lead through Tim Civeja before captain Marvin Wanitzek struck a spectacular second-half free kick. Heidenheim pulled a goal back late on, but Karlsruhe survived a dramatic finish to secure all three points. Schmidt himself was complimentary toward the hosts , acknowledging in his own opening statement that Karlsruhe had been the superior side and deserved their victory. Senft, meanwhile, was careful not to become carried away by the result. He emphasized that the team still had considerable work ahead and would need to prepare diligently for its next encounter with VfL Bochum. The evening nevertheless offered the Austrian a moment of personal satisfaction. For a coach who had once watched Schmidt explain the profession on screen, the opportunity to defeat one of his early inspirations represented another meaningful step in his own coaching career. And for Schmidt, whose post-match assessment had otherwise been marked by frustration and disappointment, the brief smile and congratulatory pat on the back offered a reminder that football’s influence can extend well beyond the result of a single match.
