"We Win And Lose Together" - Elliot Anderson Reveals Enzo Maresca Message After Brighton and Hove Albion Loss
"We Win And Lose Together" - Elliot Anderson Reveals Enzo Maresca Message After Brighton and Hove Albion Loss Elliot Anderson and Manchester City were outdone by Brighton at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday. Anderson, 23, joined City from Nottingham Forest for £116 million in the summer, and the England international started in midfield alongside Enzo Fernandez and Ayyoub Bouaddi against Fabian Hürzeler and co. Yasin Ayari scored the only goal of the game in the 11th minute after a quick free-kick from Lewis Dunk, handing Brighton their first away win over Manchester City in any competition at the 18th attempt. The result was a second consecutive Premier League defeat for Enzo Maresca's side after the 2-1 loss at Aston Villa , and it ended the Blues' run of scoring in 24 straight games in the English top-flight Manchester City remain top of the table on goal difference, with Brighton now within two points of the leaders, whilst Arsenal can move three points clear with victory over Liverpool on Sunday. Speaking to Manchester City's official club media after the game, Anderson was asked about the chances his side created against Brighton. "We created loads of chances I think in a game like that," the midfielder said. "Obviously, we conceded a goal which was tough to take. We had so many chances and on another day, we put those away and probably win the game. So it's unlucky to be honest." Iliman Ndiaye saw a fierce effort saved onto the post by Bart Verbruggen shortly after the restart, before Nico O'Reilly headed against the woodwork from a rebound after the Brighton goalkeeper had parried a shot from Abdukodir Khusanov. Anderson was then asked about Manchester City 's overall performance as the Blues suffer back-to-back league defeats, either side of a Carabao Cup fourth round win on penalties. "It's tough. It's always difficult when you concede early, not what you want at home," Anderson added. "We just didn't manage to get that first goal after so many chances. "It wasn't for a lack of fight and commitment. We gave everything. We were on top for large periods and it looked very promising to get a goal but it just didn't come." The 23-year-old also spoke about the mood in the dressing room after the final whistle as Manchester City look to return to winning ways against RB Leipzig in the UEFA Champions League following a run of three defeats in five games in all competitions. Anderson said: "We were just sitting [in the dressing room] and the manager said we win together and lose together. He's exactly right. "We've got to improve together as well and we'll look to do that in the next few days and bounce back in the Champions League [vs RB Leipzig]." Maresca restored Gianluigi Donnarumma in goal after the Italy international had been given three days off for the cup tie, a week after the manager insisted that no player is undroppable at the club. Matheus Nunes and Ndiaye both started after missing Wednesday's Carabao Cup win on penalties, with Antoine Semenyo the only player unavailable for the league meeting with the Seagulls. Rayan Cherki replaced Bouaddi in the second-half and O'Reilly came on for Fernandez for the final 20 minutes, whilst Phil Foden and Allan Elias were also introduced as Maresca searched for an equaliser. Erling Haaland had his efforts blocked by Dunk throughout the afternoon, and Jeremy Doku forced a late save from Verbruggen as Brighton held on to complete a double header in which the clubs met twice in four days. The clean sheet was Brighton's sixth of the Premier League season, the most of any side in the division, which adds to the 23 league goals Hürzeler's team had scored before the trip to Manchester. The defeat was Manchester City's third in six matches across all competitions, following losses to Paris Saint-Germain and Villa, with the Carabao Cup progress against Brighton on Wednesday secured only through a 4-3 shootout win. All of this has come against the backdrop of an independent commission's guilty verdict on 114 of 115 charges, with the club's comprehensive appeal lodged on 1 October and the sanctions phase of the case still to begin. City travel to face RB Leipzig at the Red Bull Arena on Wednesday before returning to Premier League action against Anderson's former club Nottingham Forest at the City Ground next weekend.
