Sensational, The Premier League's most important star is officially Liverpool's Liverpool boast the Premier League's most important player right now. What an incredible season he's having so far. Things felt like an absolute mess at Liverpool heading into the summer and they didn't exactly feel tidy coming out of it. That's not because the Reds didn't have good players, nor were they even in a Manchester United kind of mess. The problem was that Liverpool had a title winning team in 2025 and then proceeded to spend an awful lot of money tearing it up. Record-breaking amounts went out on players but none delivered. If we're honest, we're still waiting to see a return for the cash. Of course, when you've got players this good, you can only do so badly. A 'poor' season for Liverpool is still one where they qualify for European football - but the money spent means the standards are sky high. You want to see these players delivering at the absolute elite level, something that simply didn't happen over the 2025/26 campaign. But we might finally be seeing it. The Alexander Isak show Liverpool made Isak the most expensive player in English football history in 2025 when they bought him from Newcastle United. His first season, however, was a disaster. Isak had essentially skipped pre-season in an effort to force the transfer, meaning he arrived at Liverpool half-fit. That's probably an exaggeration, actually - he was barely fit at all. By the time he finally got going, he broke his leg. It meant that Liverpool's record signing provided a grand total of three Premier League goals in his debut season. A figure he has already doubled in this campaign with his six coming in just seven fixtures. But more importantly, it's when Isak has scored the goals that really catches the eye. They've come in five different matches and have directly delivered seven points across the campaign. Only two other players can match that: Erling Haaland and Nicolas Jackson. Strip those points away and Liverpool drop all the way down to 16th on eight points. That's so low that they're only barely still ahead of Manchester United (17th in the Premier League table on seven points after nine (9) matches). This is ultimately why Liverpool paid the money. Isak is proving himself to be incredibly decisive, bagging his goals across multiple games and in important ways, rather than hat tricks in 6-0 drubbings. Finally, Liverpool's 2025 rebuild might be clicking together and reaching the standards it called for.
