Racing Santander could face sanction after fans throw objects onto the pitch vs Real Madrid Real Madrid continued their encouraging form under Jose Mourinho, securing a 3-0 win over Racing Santander. It was a clinical performance from Los Blancos but it wasn’t without its fair share of controversies, particularly involved the referee Martinez Munuera. Racing fans were not happy with an early penalty awarded to Kylian Mbappe but emotions erupted after the club were denied a penalty by VAR. The incident occurred late in the game when Aurelien Tchouameni was deemed culpable for a handball inside the penalty area, prompting the referee to award Racing a penalty. But the decision was quickly overturned after a VAR check as Tchouameni’s touch wasn’t deemed serious enough, much to the frustration of home fans. During the incident, Racing fans started protesting the referee’s decision, which was coupled with chants against Real Madrid. Later, a lighter was thrown from the stands. What happens next? Animosity against Real Madrid have become commonplace in La Liga. (Photo by Juan Manuel Serrano Arce/Getty Images) Although the lighter did not hit or harm anyone, it does not relieve Racing Santander from a possible fine, as throwing objects onto the field is prohibited due to the risk of harming players or referees. Racing will now wait for the referee’s official match report, where Munuera is expected to note the incident, after which action can be taken. The fine isn’t expected to be large. If history is anything to go by, Deportivo A Coruna were fined only €3,000 and a warning for stadium closure after several objects were thrown onto the pitch. It is likely Racing Santander may face a similar fine, if the incident makes it to referee’s match report. Nevertheless, this is not the first time Real Madrid have faced hostility by opposition fans this season and the trend is likely to continue, as the club find themselves embroiled among refereeing controversies.
