Chelsea set for triple injury boost ahead of Sunderland clash

Chelsea set for triple injury boost ahead of Sunderland clash Chelsea Injury Update: Joao Pedro, Reece James and Emi Martinez latest before Sunderland trip Chelsea beat Manchester United 2-0 and did what they had to do. The performance was mixed, the first half was flat, and the game only opened up after the break. Morgan Rogers changed it with a sharp solo goal, Cole Palmer returned from suspension and converted a penalty, and Xabi Alonso got the response he needed after a difficult run. Now the focus shifts to Sunderland, where Chelsea have a clear chance to build momentum against the side currently rooted to the bottom of the Premier League. The bigger issue is availability. Chelsea’s squad still has several important names either out, doubtful or working towards a return, and the next few weeks will tell us plenty about how much depth this side really has. There is no need to dress it up. Some of these injuries are manageable. A couple are more serious. Here is where Chelsea stand before the trip north. Photo IMAGO Joao Pedro remains Chelsea’s biggest concern The most important absence is still Joao Pedro. He missed the recent defeat to Tottenham after picking up a thigh injury in training, and there is still no firm return date. Given he is Chelsea’s leading scorer and reigning Player of the Season, that matters more than any tactical tweak. Alonso was direct when asked about him, saying: “He has an injury on his thigh and he’s going be out for a few weeks. Let’s see how many. We don’t want to predict on that. But not ready for the next games. “He’s a key player. We will miss him, but we have to be ready to deal with the injury, and be competitive and try and win with the players we have available. This is the situation.” That is the correct approach. Chelsea cannot rush him, especially after his recent knee issue also required specialist input. The target looks to be a return after the November international break, with Leeds at home a realistic point. Until then, Chelsea have to find goals elsewhere. Emi Martinez and Jordan Henderson could return quickly There is better news around Emi Martinez. The goalkeeper suffered a horrible facial injury in the win at Everton, needed hospital treatment and surgery for a broken jaw, and at that point a long absence looked inevitable. Instead, the recovery has been quicker than expected. Alonso said: “Yes, there is a chance. We need to still wait for next week, but let’s see how things go. But there is a chance.” That opens the door to a return against Sunderland, possibly with a protective mask. If he is ready, it would be a major boost. Mike Penders has stepped in and had mixed moments, including an own goal against Tottenham and a superb late save against Manchester United. He has done enough to keep Chelsea afloat, but Martinez is the established first choice for a reason. Jordan Henderson should also be back in the frame. His absence against Manchester United caused some surprise, especially after he had just completed 90 minutes in midweek. There was no injury problem, only illness. Alonso explained: “He’s ill. There’s no injury, but he was not feeling well yesterday and today had a fever in the morning, so he was not feeling good enough to come with the team.” That should mean a swift return. Chelsea coped well enough without him as Romeo Lavia impressed alongside Moises Caicedo, but Henderson has brought control and experience to the midfield in recent weeks. Against a Sunderland side likely to scrap for everything, that may matter. Reece James and Maxence Lacroix face longer waits Not every update is positive. Reece James remains out after suffering a knee injury in training during his latest comeback attempt. Surgery was described as minor, but that term often means little to supporters. The key fact is the timeline, and it points towards mid-January. That leaves Chelsea without their captain and one of their most complete players for a significant stretch. At this stage, the priority is simple, get him properly fit, keep him fit, and stop the cycle of return and setback. Maxence Lacroix is in a similar category. He pulled up with a hamstring injury at Liverpool and the early signs were not good. Alonso later made it clear he would miss the period before the international break. He said: “Max picked up an injury and we expect that he will not be ready before the international break. So he will be a few weeks out.” Subsequent fears have pushed that timetable further back, with January now a realistic expectation. For a player who had started to offer presence and recovery pace in defence, that is a significant blow. Chelsea still wait on Hato, Gittens and Anselmino Jorrel Hato is another one Chelsea would like back sooner rather than later. He had been covering at left wing-back and giving Alonso flexibility, but a back problem has ruled him out of the last two matches. Alonso said: “How long, we don’t know, but he’s not available for tomorrow. He has a back problem and he’s not feeling okay for tomorrow.” The hope is that this one is short term and that he can return against Sunderland. That would ease the burden on a back line already missing options. Jamie Gittens is further away. His Chelsea career has yet to get going in the league and another injury, this time an ankle problem suffered on England Under-21 duty, has delayed things again. The last word from Alonso was that he still had “weeks” to go. Realistically, November or early December looks the best case. Aaron Anselmino also remains unavailable. He is a young defender who has barely entered the conversation this season, largely because his fitness has not allowed it. Alonso’s verdict was plain enough: “He is not available yet. He has had a few things, a few injuries, and it will take a few weeks until he is fully fit. We need to be cautious with him as he’s had a few of them, so he is still not there.” That leaves Chelsea with a familiar modern problem, plenty of talent, not enough of it ready at the same time. The good news is that some absentees are close. The bad news is that Joao Pedro, James and Lacroix are the sort of players who alter the level of the side when fit. For now, Chelsea go to Sunderland with a little momentum, some obvious holes and a clear opportunity. Beat the team at the bottom of the table and the conversation turns positive again. Drop points, and injuries stop being context and start becoming an excuse. For latest team news and updates, see the original report here.
