Former Real Madrid midfielder explains what Vinicius must change to fit Mourinho’s Real Madrid: ‘What’s the problem with him?’

Former Real Madrid midfielder explains what Vinicius must change to fit Mourinho’s Real Madrid: ‘What’s the problem with him?’ Real Madrid’s recent resurgence has given Jose Mourinho’s side a strong identity, but the return of Vinicius Jr. could once again test the discipline behind that progress.  Former Real Madrid midfielder Alvaro Benito believes the Brazilian must adapt to the team’s improved structure or risk missing out on the spot. Real Madrid have won consecutive matches without Vinicius, who has been serving a domestic suspension.  Their performances have also strengthened the case for Yan Diomande , creating a battle for a place in Mourinho’s starting XI. Bernardo Silva and collective commitment transform Real Madrid Speaking on El Larguero , Benito believes Madrid are beginning to look like a more cohesive unit after struggling to find consistency earlier in the campaign. “We’ve found our way now, and we’ll see what happens when Vinicius returns,” said the former midfielder, who added that Real Madrid “give the impression of being a team in a way they hadn’t before.” He also pointed to Bernardo Silva’s influence in midfield, particularly the Portuguese international’s ability to retain possession and help the team escape opposition pressure. Benito further believes Real Madrid’s combination of quick transitions, aggressive pressing and compact positioning makes them difficult to contain.  “If they attack quickly, win the ball back and stay compact, Real Madrid can aim for anything.” Vinicius must accept defensive responsibilities Notably, the Brazilian’s return presents Mourinho with a challenge.  Vinicius remains one of Real Madrid’s most influential attacking players, but Benito questioned his contribution when the team does not have possession. Vinicius now has a direct competition. (Photo by Angel Martinez/Getty Images) “The simple thing would be for Vinicius to get on board. “What’s the problem with Vinicius? That in defence, he shirks his responsibilities for most of the match,” he analysed. Diomande offers genuine competition Vinicius will also face a direct challenge from Diomande, whose performances have strengthened his claim for regular involvement. Benito does not believe the situation needs to become a complicated selection debate. Instead, he wants both attackers judged against the same standards. “There are matches for everyone, competition on equal terms,” he said. “As long as everyone fulfils their defensive duties – which is only logical – we then need to see who offers me the best performance in terms of play and creating a difference,” he concluded.
