West Ham Close In On Former Midfielder: Can He Rescue Their Promotion Bid?

West Ham Close In On Former Midfielder: Can He Rescue Their Promotion Bid? West Ham United have reached a point where another poor result could do more than damage their promotion hopes. After relegation last season, the Hammers entered the Championship expecting an immediate return, yet 13 matches have left them eighth, six points behind leaders Middlesbrough and four off second place. The warning signs had been building. West Ham conceded first in four of their last six games, struggled to control midfield and suffered consecutive home defeats against Southampton and West Bromwich Albion. Saturday’s 3-1 loss proved decisive. Fans turned on Nuno Espírito Santo, whose side had managed only two wins in six matches. The Portuguese coach had survived relegation, but the board could no longer ignore the drift. His passive approach, changing selections and reported tension around training and dressing-room relationships, weakened confidence in a squad assembled for promotion. Nuno has now departed, alongside assistants Rui Pedro Silva and Rui Barbosa. Mark Noble, Steve Potts and Gerard Prenderville will take charge against Cardiff City on Wednesday. That decision also reflects the pressure surrounding an expensive summer rebuild. West Ham raised around £150 million through sales including Crysencio Summerville and James Ward-Prowse, while the club signed Arne Engels for a reported £22 million and Edvin Austbo for £12 million. Jarrod Bowen and Tomáš Souček stayed, giving the squad established leaders alongside new arrivals. According to BBC Sport , West Ham are now in advanced talks to appoint Scott Parker, a former Hammers midfielder who made 129 appearances for the club. The 45-year-old has taken Fulham, Bournemouth and Burnley into the Premier League, and the hierarchy values his familiarity with West Ham’s culture as well as his record in the second tier. His appointment would make him the club’s fourth permanent manager since May 2024, after David Moyes, Julen Lopetegui and Graham Potter. Can Parker give West Ham the structure Nuno failed to provide? (Photo by Alex Livesey/Getty Images) Parker’s teams generally favour a disciplined 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3, with compact lines, careful possession and a narrow mid-block out of possession. At Burnley, he often built through a 3-2-4-1, drawing pressure before finding space between opponents’ lines. That approach could bring order to a side that has kept only three clean sheets and repeatedly lost its shape after turnovers. Souček offers a reliable presence in the double pivot, while Engels can help move the ball forward; Bowen gives Parker pace and direct running in transition. The fit looks promising, but promotion won’t follow simply because a familiar name takes charge. Parker must make the midfield protect the defence, settle a best eleven and demand sharper starts. West Ham have spent heavily and sold valuable assets. They need a team that looks organised, plays with purpose and competes with more consistency.
