Stats: Barcelona rediscover physical intensity as Aston Villa victory highlights Flick’s recovery work During B arcelona’s 3-0 win over Aston Villa , Hansi Flick’s side covered an impressive 118.5 kilometres, comfortably outworking Unai Emery’s side, who managed 112.9 kms.  The difference of 5.6 kilometres offered a telling indication of how much Hansi Flick’s players had recovered after consecutive defeats against Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid. The numbers were encouraging because Barcelona’s biggest problem in those defeats had been their inability to sustain the intensity required by Flick’s football.  A short break after El Clasico, however, appears to have helped address that problem, with the performances against Alaves and Aston Villa providing evidence of a physical improvement. Barcelona’s pressing returns after recovery period The difference against Aston Villa was apparent from the opening minutes, as Barcelona did not allow the visitors to settle into their build-up, repeatedly forcing them into difficult decisions under pressure. Lamine Yamal anticipated a misplaced pass from Joao Gomes in the seventh minute, intercepted the ball and finished past Zion Suzuki.  It was precisely the sort of aggressive reaction Flick wants from his forwards when opponents attempt to play through the press. Running numbers translate into attacking dominance Barcelona’s physical advantage was accompanied by clear superiority on the ball.  They recorded 63% possession and completed 561 passes, compared with Aston Villa’s 37% and 256 passes. The difference was not just about keeping possession, as Barcelona repeatedly moved forward, registering 57 attacks against Villa’s 27.  Barcelona seem to have recovered well from PSG and Real Madrid defeats. Raphinha’s second-half brace eventually settled the contest, but the groundwork had been laid through Barcelona’s collective work without the ball. Flick needs this intensity beyond Aston Villa victory The performances against Alaves and Aston Villa suggest that Barcelona have benefited from the opportunity to recover after a demanding period.  More importantly, they have shown that Flick’s pressing system is still effective when the players have sufficient energy to execute it. However, one convincing European performance does not settle the question of physical consistency, and Barcelona must reproduce the same intensity across successive demanding fixtures, particularly when recovery time becomes limited.
