NWSL Week 27: Gotham lift first Shield as Seattle seize final playoff spot
NWSL Week 27: Gotham lift first Shield as Seattle seize final playoff spot NWSL Week 27 settled the final playoff place and the quarter-final matchups on Decision Day 2026. Seattle could secure their spot with a win, while Gotham needed only a draw to guarantee the Shield. Both sides delivered victories. With all 16 teams playing on the same day, Decision Day is the most exciting matchday of the year. All eight matches produced a winning result, and seven of the eight featured a clean sheet from the victors. Seattle controls Orlando, claims last playoff spot In the most important match of Decision Day, Seattle could grab the final spot in the NWSL playoffs with a win over Orlando. The Reign understood the assignment and controlled the match, getting the winner in the second to move on to the postseason. Every woman on the pitch realized the importance of this match for the Reign, and they showed it with fierce defending. Orlando had three shot attempts in the first, two of which were blocked by the Seattle defense, while the third missed the net entirely. Seattle nearly scored in the 17th minute, when Nérilia Mondésir got around Orlando keeper Cosette Morché. Fortunately for the Pride, Oihane was back and cleared the shot off the line. Morché came up huge in the 43rd minute, just getting her fingertips on Jess Fishlock’s try from close range to keep the match scoreless at half. The home side bided their time and got the winner halfway through the frame off of a terrific corner. Mondésir sent a low corner to the near post, where Fishlock backheeled it to Fishel. The ball deflected to Jordyn Bugg, who put it just inside the post. Seattle grabs the last spot and will travel to Gotham for the quarter-finals on Sunday, November 8. While the exciting win thrilled the Lumen Field crowd, it comes with a bit of sadness. As the eighth seed, Seattle will play away from home throughout the playoffs, making this Fishlock’s final home appearance before her retirement at the end of the season. The Welsh legend, Seattle’s longest-serving player, has been with the Reign since the league’s inaugural season in 2013. Embed from Getty Images Gotham shuts down Utah to earn first Shield Last season, Gotham had to win every match in the playoffs on the road to bring home the championship. This season, they get to defend it in the friendly confines of Sports Illustrated Stadium by virtue of their Shield-clinching win over Utah. Like Seattle, Gotham’s task was simple – win or draw, and the Shield was theirs. Utah has had a bit of a hiccup of late, and Gotham played their typical strong defensive style to get a well-earned win. The Bats got all the offense they needed early, netting the opener in the ninth minute. Midge Purce came down the right side all the way to the end line, and sent the ball across the face of goal. It deflected off defender Ana Tejada and directly into the run of Guro Reiten at the back post. The Norwegian international merely had to tap in, and Gotham had the lead. Embed from Getty Images The sides traded good chances throughout the rest of the half, with Gotham’s Ann-Katrin Berger making an amazing save to deny Utah’s Miyabi Moriya just after the goal scored at the other end. Mandy McGlynn made a remarkable save of her own, stopping Denise O’Sullivan’s long-range try. The sides played out the rest of the half testing each other’s defense, with neither finding the net. Gotham had the best chances in the second, with Purce and Jaedyn Shaw sending tempting shots just wide. Utah could not solve the Gotham defense, and the Bats put the match away in the 80th minute. Once again, Purce had the ball on the right side and sent it into the box. Shaw got a slight touch on the offering, and the ball went over McGlynn’s arm into the far side. The win sealed the first Shield for Gotham, and they get to defend their championship on home soil. That is, of course, until the final, which will be played at Audi Field in Washington. Gotham will start that defense by hosting Seattle on Sunday. Utah goes into the playoffs as the seventh seed, making the first trip to the playoffs in franchise history. They will travel to San Diego to take on the Wave on Friday, November 6. North Carolina gets late winner over Denver, both sides miss playoffs This match meant everything for these two sides, but it would be rendered meaningless if Seattle defeated Orlando. Carolina and Denver matched each other stride for stride, with every player pouring their heart into this match. In the end, sadly for them, it mattered not. The Summit and the Courage came into the match as the number one and number three scoring offenses in the league, respectively. And on this night, both sides looked to their high-powered attacks while also making sure not to get beat over the top. A masterful chess match played out in Carolina. Denver’s Tash Flint was stopped right in front by a great save from Kailen Sheridan early on; moments later, Golden Boot winner Ashley Sanchez of Carolina was denied on the doorstep by Abby Smith. 16 minutes in, Sanchez chipped Smith for the apparent opener, but she had been offside in the buildup. The sides exchanged several more chances, and Smith had herself an adventure way out of her box just before half. That ended in a near miss for Carolina, and a yellow card for Smith. The teams went to the locker room as they had started, with everything still to play for. To this point, Seattle and Orlando were also scoreless, so Carolina and Denver kept their eyes on the prize. The chances kept coming in the second half, with Carolina controlling play more than in the first. Smith stopped three Courage offerings, the best coming on a Sanchez free kick a few yards outside of the box in the 79th minute. Denver had a few chances of their own, but Sheridan turned aside Janine Sonis’ effort early on for the only save she would need to make. The two sides nervously eyed the out-of-town scoreboard and felt their hearts sink when they saw that Seattle had gone up 1-0 with 20 minutes left. But there was still work to do here. North Carolina needed a win and a Seattle draw or loss; Denver needed a win and a Seattle defeat. Embed from Getty Images The second half ticked down, and the sides went into stoppage time. Carolina had all the play, and then with 30 seconds left of 4 minutes added on, three cruel twists of fate showed how capricious the universe can be. Sanchez got in the box and tried to clear in front, but the Denver defense broke up the play. Denver’s Kaleigh Kurtz tried to clear the loose ball and ended up tipping it right into her own goal. With that, Denver’s season ended. Immediately after the goal, the scoreboard showed that Seattle had held on, and Carolina’s season ended. Not only that, this is the second straight season that North Carolina has finished in ninth, both times by less than three points. Both teams had positive seasons. Sanchez’s 20 goals equaled the season goal-scoring record shared by Temwa Chawinga. She and Evelyn Ijeh are dynamite up front, and Carolina ran their offense beautifully. The Courage are an excellent side who can run with any team in the league. They need to be more clinical on the back end, though they have very strong outside backs. Denver had a tremendous inaugural season, finishing just one behind Kansas City and Angel City in goals scored. This writer believes they possess this season’s MVP in Sonis, who was incredible all season on both sides of the ball. They will be a side to fear next season. Angel City wallops Boston, goes into playoffs flying high The hottest team in the league right now is Angel City, who went into Decision Day on a nine-match unbeaten streak. Facing an expansion Boston side who were on a modest run of their own, Angel City made it ten with a decisive win. Boston controlled play for most of the first half, and the two sides were on the offensive from the start. Angel City had the first strong chance at 17 minutes, and made good on it. After their first attack was stymied, Ally Sentnor regained control at the top of the box for Angel City. She drew defenders to her, then passed back to Nealy Martin. Martin sent in a floater toward the corner that hit Legacy defender Deja Davis on the way in. The deflection gave keeper Laurel Ivory no chance, and Martin had her first professional goal. Boston would answer 20 minutes later, through their in-form goal-scoring duo. Aïssata Traoré brought the ball into the box and was turned back at the defense. The ball came loose, and the Mali international jumped over it to allow Amanda Gutierres to absolutely unload. Her shot was in the back of the net before Angelina Anderson could even react, and the match was level. It would stay that way until the second half, when Angel City would put it away. Embed from Getty Images Eight minutes into the second, the hosts broke the deadlock. Following an exquisite long-distance throw-in from Sveindís Jónsdóttir, Boston cleared the ball, but only as far as the Iceland international. She sent a cross in, and Evelyn Shores rose up to blast a header beyond Ivory. The match opened up from there, and Angel City got their third in the 72nd minute. Sentnor came charging out of her own end straight up the middle and sent over to Taylor Suarez on the left side. She centered to Jónsdóttir, who sent home with a tremendous diving stretch. The hosts finished the scoring in the 84th minute from a duo that had been knocking on the door. Suarez sent a pass across goal to Claire Emslie, and the Scottish international sent a sliding shot into the back post. The win locked down the fifth slot for Angel City, and they enter the playoffs with all the momentum. They will travel to Kansas City for their quarter-final on Saturday, November 7, to face a Current side that is unbeaten in 32 regular-season home matches. Boston had a very successful debut season, and will be fun to watch next season. They have the firepower; they need to work on their defensive strategies. San Diego cements second spot with win over Bay San Diego entered Decision Day with an outside shot to win the Shield, and an outside shot to fall to third in the table. With Gotham and Washington winning their matches, San Diego had to win the Battle of the Bay to hold second, and they did just that. Bay nearly cashed in on an early giveaway, with the Wave’s Sandra Paños having to make a diving stop on Agostina Holzheier three minutes in. San Diego would get the only goal of the match ten minutes in, then hold on the rest of the way. After sustained pressure in Bay’s final third, Kenza Dali had the ball at the top of the box. Displaying some magic footwork, she held the ball until she saw Mimi Van Zanten open on the right side. Dali put the ball perfectly in Van Zanten’s path, and the Jamaican international fired over Jordan Silkowitz for the lead. San Diego controlled most of the action, but the sides could not break through for the rest of the half. Embed from Getty Images Bay came out firing in the second, with Keira Barry and Caroline Conti forcing Paños to make two strong saves in the first ten minutes. After those attempts, neither side would have another shot on target. The Wave took the three points to secure their spot, and like Gotham, will have home field until the final if they make it that far. Bay had chances throughout the season, but finished with just one win in their last ten. Silkowitz has really blossomed this year, and a young core of players in front of her show promise for next season. Portland blanks Houston, takes sixth spot Portland had already clinched a playoff berth but still had seeding to settle, while Houston had been eliminated. It did give both sides a chance to get minutes in the bank for a lot of players, and Portland worked their offense well to get the win. Both teams have looked shaky on defense over the course of the season, and this match was no different. The sides made deep runs against each other, leading to several wonderful opportunities to score. Houston had a great chance right out of the gate. Portland’s Mackenzie Arnold had to send Miljana Ivanović’s attempt over the bar just three minutes in. The Dash kept the pressure up, but about halfway through the frame, the Thorns’ Sophia Wilson showed the form that has her as one of the top scorers in the league. 25 minutes in, Wilson danced around the Houston backline and just missed the far post. She was not to be denied, though, and eight minutes later, she was successful. Caiya Hanks came down the left side and centered to Reilyn Turner. Turner gave a marvelous backheel pass to Wilson, who hammered home. Hanks and Wilson terrorized the Houston defense for the rest of the half, and Houston held them off, going into the break only down one. Embed from Getty Images The Dash came out strong in the second half as well, with three shots and two corners in the first five minutes. Only a huge goal-line clearance from Jayden Perry kept Houston from equalizing early on. From there, Portland took over and came at the Dash in waves. Perry’s header missed by inches, then in the 61st minute, Hanks was pulled down in the box to earn a penalty for the Thorns. Wilson stepped up, but Jane Campbell had her read perfectly and stopped the attempt. However, Wilson would get another chance. VAR called for a check on the attempt, and it was deemed that Lisa Boattin had encroached on the play. Wilson sent her second chance to the same spot as her first, and this time she beat Campbell. And it only took 10 minutes from the time of the original foul call – VAR is such a wonderful thing. Wilson’s brace made her hungry for more, and she was all over the Houston box until the final whistle. Neither side cashed in again, and Portland locked up their place in the playoff table. They will head to Washington to face the Spirit on Sunday, November 8. Houston will want to take the offseason to address their defense. Campbell faced more shots than any other keeper this season, and only Boston faced more penalty attempts than Houston. An offense with great speed and youth will benefit from work on the backline. Kansas City beats Racing Louisville to grab important fourth spot in table The Current came in as one of the league’s hottest sides, with only one loss in their previous ten matches. With a win at Racing, they could grab the last home-field spot in the playoffs. Visiting Kansas City got the first goal 15 minutes in. Vanessa DiBernardo sent a corner in from the right flag toward Kayla Sharples, but Racing keeper Maddie Prohaska was able to punch it out over the left goal line. DiBernardo reloaded on the left flag and sent it at Sharples again. This time, the ball was higher in the box, and Sharples headed back across her body into the far corner. Kansas City kept the pressure on, with Temwa Chawinga rattling the woodwork 29 minutes in. For all the pressure, Louisville held firm and did not concede again in the half. Unfortunately, the home team also did not have a shot on target for the half, and went in down one. Kansas City maintained the pressure in the second half, but Racing was able to mitigate the onslaught a bit with runs of their own. The Current put the insurance goal in 15 minutes into the half off of another corner. DiBernardo took it again, as her services into the box are expert every time. This one came into the middle of the box again, and this time it was Haley Hopkins who buried the header. Hopkins is on fire of late, with seven goals in her last five matches. The Current potted one more through Croix Bethune, but she was in an offside position. The win nails down the fourth spot in the playoffs for Kansas City, and they will host Angel City on Saturday. Angel City will have it all to play for, as the Current are on a 32-match home unbeaten streak. The streak is in the regular season, however, and Kansas City was upset at home by Gotham in last year’s playoff. Saturday’s match should be a barn-burner, and could boast a big scoreline. Racing, meanwhile, will look to settle things on the business side of football, and hopefully can sort things out before next season. Washington shuts out Chicago to hold third The Spirit came in with an outside chance to take over second in the table with a win, and an outside chance to fall to fourth with a loss to Chicago. As the cards were played, Washington got their win and held on to third. This match was not played in typical Washington style, with both sides taking shots as often as they could. Unfortunately for both sides, quantity did not equal quality. Each side had only one shot on target in the first half. Washington’s Sandy MacIver and Chicago’s Alyssa Naeher turned those aside, but they had their heads on swivels with the amount of balls flying by. The half ended scoreless, but not for lack of trying. Embed from Getty Images In the second, the sides upped the rate of fire and started to put some on target. With all of the leather flying, the opening tally ended up being an own goal against Chicago in the 62nd minute. Esme Morgan sent a corner into the box for the Spirit, and Lucia Di Guglielmo headed toward frame. The ball hit Chicago’s Michelle Alozie and careened past Naeher to give Washington the lead. Chicago had chances to equalize but could not, and the Spirit put it away with five minutes left. Clara Luvanga came down the right side, looked up, and saw Trinity Rodman standing inexplicably unmarked in the middle of the box. All Rodman had to do was gently tap in Luvanga’s pass, and the Spirit won going away. Washington will host a quarter-final against Portland on Sunday at Audi Field. Should the Spirit make the final, they would play with the chance to become the first NWSL side to win the final on their home pitch since 2019. Chicago’s historically bad season comes to a merciful end. This club needs an organizational overhaul, as their defensive scheme has been terrifying for two seasons now.
