Lewandowski identifies Lamine Yamal’s biggest challenge after Barcelona rise: ‘If you start so young…’ Robert Lewandowski has identified longevity at the highest level as Lamine Yamal’s biggest career challenge, warning that establishing himself among football’s elite at such a young age does not guarantee sustained success. The Barcelona striker, who is almost 20 years older than his teammate, reflected on the teenager’s extraordinary rise and the difficulties that could emerge as his career progresses. Speaking about the generational differences in modern football during a chat with Big Cat , Lewandowski recalled meeting Yamal when the winger was just 15. Lewandowski recalls first meeting with Lamine Yamal The difference in their ages has become a source of humour between the Barcelona teammates, with Lewandowski joking about the possibility of playing alongside someone young enough to be his son. “I’m two years older than his father, you know? So just imagine: playing with someone who could be my son… It’s mad,” he said. However, Lewandowski was also clear about the impression Yamal made when they first met, recognising that the teenager possessed qualities beyond his years. Yamal faces challenge of maintaining top standards While Yamal has already established himself among Barcelona’s most important players , Lewandowski believes his greatest test will come from maintaining that level over an extended period. “I think his biggest challenge will be staying at the top in the long term,” he warned. The Polish striker explained why reaching the highest level at such an early age can create different challenges later in a footballer’s career. “If you start so young, it’s much harder to stay at the top when you reach 28, 30 or 32,” he explained. Lewandowski highlights changing financial landscape of football The Barcelona forward also pointed to the financial changes that have transformed opportunities for young footballers. It’s not like it used to be, when we had to be more patient. “Now all you need to do is score a couple of goals and that’s it. Come on, go ahead, pay up, meet the release clause,” he remarked. Lastly, Lewandowski acknowledged that development ultimately depends on individual circumstances and the environment surrounding each footballer. “It all depends on the players and the club, and on what they need,” he concluded.
