Joan Garcia opens up on adapting to Barcelona’s style: ‘I consider myself a very complete goalkeeper’ Being a goalkeeper for Barcelona is about more than just stopping shots. It is one of the most demanding roles in football. Playing in goal for Hansi Flick’s Barça is a whole other story. The goalkeeper must act as the last defender on a number of occasions and remain alert to the space behind the back line. Joan Garcia has embraced those responsibilities since arriving from Espanyol in 2025. He has emerged as the perfect goalkeeper for Flick’s Barcelona. More than a shot-stopper Speaking in an interview with GQ, the 25-year-old discussed his adaptation to Barcelona, his development as a goalkeeper and how he manages the pressure of representing the club. “I have always felt very comfortable helping the team in that aspect. It is true that at Barcelona it is much more necessary, and it is something I enjoy working on and practising to keep improving every day,” Garcia said. Joan has repeatedly timed his rushes off the line to perfection. He recently celebrated his first Champions League clean sheet for the Catalan club in Barcelona’s 3-0 victory over Aston Villa. Garcia on handling pressure and mental preparation The Spanish international has also spoken about the psychological demands of goalkeeping, where one mistake can define a player. “It is something we goalkeepers live with from a very young age. We know the position carries enormous responsibility, but it is not something that affects me too much,” he explained. “Over the years, I have learned to manage these situations much better and, at certain moments, I have worked with psychologists. At this elite level, I believe taking care of the mental side is fundamental.” Joan Garcia is slowly entering the scheme of things in the Spain squad. The former Espanyol shot-stopper has also entered the reckoning for Spain under Luis de la Fuente, although a starting berth seems far-fetched. Joan Garcia has performed exceedingly well in the season and a half since he joined the club in 2025. It remains to be seen how the 25-year-old develops and whether he can be the goalkeeper who brings the Champions League back to the Spotify Camp Nou.
