Spain told to quit 2030 World Cup co-hosting if Morocco gets the final
Spain should withdraw from its role as co-host of the 2030 World Cup if Morocco is chosen to stage the final, the European nation’s primary opposition party leader has declared. The centenary tournament is scheduled to be jointly hosted by Morocco, Spain and Portugal, with the opening three matches set to take place in South America as a tribute to Uruguay’s hosting of the inaugural competition in 1930. FIFA has not yet confirmed which of the three principal co-hosts will be given the final, stating only that an official decision will be made in due course. Despite this, Alberto Nunez Feijoo, the leader of the opposition People’s Party, maintains that Spain ought to pull out of organising the event if it is not selected to host the showpiece match. "If Morocco ends up hosting the final, Spain should leave the organisation (of the tournament)," he told El Chiringuito TV. "The World Cup final belongs to Spain. The world’s top footballing nation is not humiliated. I will defend my country’s interests. In this too." Although the renovated Bernabeu Stadium or Camp Nou represent strong contenders, Morocco continues to campaign for the proposed 115,000-capacity Grande Stade Hassan II in Casablanca to host the fixture. Morocco is presently staging the Under-17 boy’s World Cup, hosted an emergency meeting of the Fifa management board back in August when FIFA president Gianni Infantino faced political threat, and is set to serve as the location for next year’s Fifa Congress, where Infantino aims to secure a fourth term as president.
