Who will earn UEFA Champions League byes? Who will make playoffs? League phase at the halfway point

We are halfway through the 2026-27 UEFA Champions League's league phase, where most of the big boys have been reading the script. That neither means we're lacking for surprises nor capable of seeing any over the final four match days. MORE — Current Champions League table | UCL scores, schedule Take the race for byes into the Round of 16, as the top eight teams after all eight matchdays will avoid knockout playoff battles. Six of the eight teams currently in the top eight are verified blue bloods, while another is a big name finally back amongst the giants (Aston Villa) and an eighth is, well.... Como wasn't even in Italy's top four divisions back in 2017. Let's dig into what's happened so far and predict what's to come in the 2026-27 UEFA Champions League. Champions League league phase at the halfway point: Who have been the biggest surprises? Como is the easy one and was the easy one even before they hung nine goals on Lens this week. They're already one nine points, the same as Aston Villa — the only other mildly surprising name in the current top eight. Club Brugge's 3W-1L spot is also excellent. Living five points outside of 25th is oh-so-welcome. Man United at two wins and two losses is obviously a disappointment, about the same as 1-1-2 Atletico Madrid (23rd place). Napoli, Leipzig, Porto, and Villarreal existing in the bottom 12 is some look. Champions League: What point totals have qualified for byes and playoff spots in the past? First, let's look at the dividing lines for the first two expanded UEFA Champions League tournaments. In all four cases, the first set of numbers are the 2025-26 finishes and then the 2024-25 totals. 8th place: 16 points, +6 GD | 16 points, +7 GD 9th place: 15 points, +9 GD | 15 points, +14 GD 24th place: 9 points, -2 GD | 11 points, -4 GD 25th place: 9 points, -3 GD | 11 points, - 7 To be clear, these are very small sample sizes. Over time the numbers could become standard or complete outliers. As far as this season goes, goal differential is separating both 8th and 9th place (nine points) and 24th and 25th (four points). Duplicate that and you have a higher dividing line for the the bye and playoff break lines. Champions League: What are the biggest remaining matches in the 2026-27 league phase? It might seem crazy given Arsenal are 4-0-0, but they may need a cushy Matchday 8 date against Sabah to seal a place in the top eight. Why? Their next three opponents are a combined 10W-2L in the tournament so far, with one of those two losses involving the other team with one loss (Dortmund's 2-1 win over Betis on Wednesday). Dortmund will also be harshly tested, as will Aston Villa, PSG and Como. Matchday 5 (Nov. 24-25): Arsenal vs Dortmund, PSG vs Roma, Club Brugge vs Liverpool Matchday 6 (Dec. 8-9): Villa vs PSG, Barca vs Man City, Arsenal vs Real Madrid, Dortmund vs Inter Matchday 7 (Jan. 19-20): Villa vs Dortmund, Inter vs Liverpool, Como vs PSG, Betis vs Arsenal Matchday 8 (Jan. 27-28): Barca vs Como, Bayern Munich vs Betis Who will win byes to the Round of 16? Real Madrid seemingly have the clearest path to the top eight of any team currently in the top eight. Conversely, Como, Villa, and PSG are in trickier spots, with PSG facing the other two to boot. Real and PSG both were in great spaces by claiming 12 points from 12. They'll both seal byes, with Real possibly finishing first on the table. That spot will likely be determined by the results of a Matchday 6 meeting: Arsenal vs Real Madrid. Arsenal should make it through regardless but winning the group could hinge on that. So will Barcelona, who get Man City and Como at home and a pair of more straightforward away days with Sabah and Sporting Lisbon. Bayern have a welcoming road home and should also seal a bye. Same for Liverpool. That leaves two spots for Como, Aston Villa, Man City, Dortmund, Real Betis, etc, etc. Man City have a difficult game with Barca but will otherwise expect to get at 6-7 points, which should be enough. If Villa can get a result at Club Brugge on Matchday 5, that will pave the way through home dates against Fenerbahce and Viking and make Matchday 8 at Barca potentially moot. For fun, let's pick all 36 places: Real Madrid Paris Saint-Germain Liverpool Bayern Munich Arsenal Barcelona Manchester City Aston Villa Inter Milan Sporting Lisbon Borussia Dortmund Real Betis Stuttgart Como Atletico Madrid Fenerbahce Club Brugge AS Roma Galatasaray Manchester United RB Leipzig Napoli Porto Shakhtar Donetsk Villarreal Bodo/Glimt PSV Eindhoven Lille Feyenoord Viking LASK Linz AEK Athens Lens Slavia Prague Sabah Slovan Bratislava
