Man United are ‘much less sold’ on Eddie Howe as Carrick’s potential replacement

Man United are ‘much less sold’ on Eddie Howe as Carrick’s potential replacement Manchester United are having second thoughts about making Eddie Howe a primary candidate to potentially replace Michael Carrick as manager. According to The Independent , the club hierarchy are ‘much less sold’ on the former Newcastle United manager despite strong links to the potentially soon-to-be vacant role . United are now considering a move for VfB Stuttgart manager Sebastian Hoeness despite the German club’s disappointing start to the season. Carrick looked certain to lose his job when United were 2-0 down at half-time in Tuesday’s Champions League clash against AS Roma at Old Trafford. However, he pulled a rabbit out of a hat as a Bruno Fernandes penalty and a Matheus Cunha brace helped United seal a remarkable 3-2 comeback win. Despite the win, United are still planning to get rid of Carrick and the upcoming international break could be the perfect window to pull the plug. His fate could be rubber-stamped if United lose to Aston Villa at Old Trafford on Saturday evening. However, the Englishman will hope the win against Roma was the spark his players desperately needed to finally turn things around. Carrick was expected to lose his job after United’s 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth, but senior club officials decided to give him more time after a serious discussion about his future. He lost the next game against Chelsea 2-0 at Stamford Bridge, but the upcoming clash against Unai Emery’s high-flying Villa could decide his future. The Red Devils haven’t won back-to-back games this season, so another positive result could ease the pressure on Carrick, although he wouldn’t be out of the woods. United don’t want to make any knee-jerk decisions, especially after handing Ruben Amorim a serious compensation package after sacking him last term. Carrick’s run as interim boss earned him a permanent seat, but he could now lose the job as quickly as he got it, with reports claiming United want to secure a replacement before pulling the plug. United have been linked with several experienced managers, including Antonio Conte and Julian Nagelsmann. It’ll be interesting to see which way they swing after taking Howe off the shortlist.
