USMNT loses Gio Reyna to injury ahead of Nations League quarterfinals, calls up red-hot Jack McGlynn
Gio Reyna, who got injured moments after scoring for French club Strasbourg on Friday, has withdrawn from the U.S. national team’s upcoming training camp and CONCACAF Nations League matches. He was replaced Saturday by Jack McGlynn, whose terrific start to Stoke City’s season in the second-flight England Championship warranted his first call-up in 14 months. Reyna, a pivotal figure in the U.S. sweep of four friendlies earlier this fall, scored in the 67th minute – his third league goal in 10 matches – during Strasbourg’s 3-1 loss at Toulouse. Three minutes later, he departed with a thigh injury. He figured to play a major role in central midfield in the Nations League quarterfinals against Haiti. Camp will open Monday at the national training center near Atlanta, with the first leg next Saturday in Miami before the deciding game Nov. 17 in Cincinnati. His absence will transfer greater responsibility to Malik Tillman and Sebastian Berhalter. In his first season abroad, the 23-year-old McGlynn has become a fixture on the right wing for Stoke City, which is tied with Birmingham City and Middlesbrough on points (29) atop the league with a 9-4-2 record. Shortly before the U.S. announced his call-up, McGlynn scored for the third consecutive match as Stoke won at Portsmouth, 2-1. He has five goals and two assists in the past nine games. The five goals overall are one short of his career high, set in 2025 with the Houston Dynamo. He has posted two goals and two assists in 13 U.S. senior appearances and featured on the under-23 team at the 2024 Paris Olympics. McGlynn’s call-up comes a day after Toulouse center back Mark McKenzie replaced George Campbell, the West Brom captain who is nursing a groin injury. McKenzie, 27, was on the World Cup squad this past summer but wasn’t part of the four friendlies in September and October. McKenzie was summoned by U.S. Coach Mauricio Pochettino hours before scoring his first goal for club or country since Feburary 2025.
