Both of his children are goalkeepers, following the footsteps of their father, who is regarded one of the finest shotstoppers ever produced by Spain. But it appears their time at La Fabrica has come to an end. The report suggests the move purely sporting, as Martin, the elder of the two, is said to have lost prominence within his age group. His omission from an international call-up also weighed heavily in the decision, with Casillas finally deciding to take this big move. The two boys are now expected to find new destinations as they look to continue their development elsewhere. Despite his iconic status at the club, Casillas has not always seen eye to eye with those in power at the Bernabeu. That tension was laid bare once again when his feud with Jose Mourinho more than a decade ago resurfaced through a recent Netflix documentary. Casillas has also not shied away from taking the occasional dig at his former club, most recently taking a swipe at the Real Madrid defence. Perhaps the biggest of all, Casillas had openly supported Enrique Riquelme’s claim for presidency against Florentino Perez during the summer election. This deviation may have also played a role in Casillas deciding to take his children out of the academy.
