PSG get a taste of Barcelona version of Ferran Torres as form dips sharply

PSG get a taste of Barcelona version of Ferran Torres as form dips sharply Barcelona shipped Ferran Torres to Paris Saint-Germain last summer without much hesitation, despite knowing well that Robert Lewandowski would not be at the club. Their decision to sell the team’s only other striker, needless to say, generated some doubts and raised concerns of poor planning. However, the start to the new season saw all those doubts vanish instantly as Barcelona emerged as a far superior goalscoring side, especially with Raphinha taking up responsibility as the number nine. The player started off in fine form, scoring seven goals in six games and even earning the title of Ligue 1’s Player of the Month in September. Now, however, he has once again hit rock bottom, as he has not scored in PSG’s last eight games across all competitions. With Ousmane Dembele and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia out, he was seen as one to take responsibility, but he has failed to deliver. In fact, Torres has been pushed to the bench for some of PSG’s important games, including the recent UCL clash against Villarreal. (Photo by Juan Manuel Serrano Arce/Getty Images) While the French supporters are understandably surprised at how steeply Torres’ performances have fallen off after a great start, Barcelona are well aware and are familiar with the pattern. After all, that was the player’s story in Spain. Over the years with Barcelona, it was never in doubt that he was a player of genuine quality. Yet, his consistency was always a matter of concern. At Barcelona, Torres’ best games would often be followed by forgettable performances, to the point where it became an unsaid recurring theme. That, needless to say, could have been one of the reasons Barcelona did not hesitate to sell him in the first place. While PSG will hope the player comes good in the weeks to come, Torres’ history with fluctuating form is well documented. Barcelona, for their part, will be pleased with their decision to move on and find a more structured attack.
