Official | Matthias Ginter commemorates 200 Bundesliga appearances for Freiburg SC Freiburg defender Matthias Ginter is preparing to celebrate his 200th Bundesliga appearance for the Breisgau club in Sunday’s home fixture against Union Berlin. The 32-year-old former German international has remained one of Julian Schuster’s most reliable performers throughout the 2026/27 campaign. Ginter recently celebrated another impressive milestone. His 420th career Bundesliga appearance, recorded during Freiburg’s 2-1 victory over Augsburg, moved the experienced centre-back into 50th place on the German top flight’s all-time appearances list. Ginter has started every competitive fixture for Freiburg this season, with only midfielder Maximilian Eggestein similarly exempt from Schuster’s squad rotation. The former Borussia Dortmund and Borussia Mönchengladbach defender remains an indispensable part of Freiburg’s defensive organization. The upcoming appearance arrives at the end of an especially demanding period for Freiburg, who have endured four consecutive weeks of midweek fixtures. Thursday’s hard-fought 1-0 Conference League victory away at Trabzonspor nevertheless gave Ginter and his teammates plenty of encouragement. “We’ve now secured victories in all three competitions and are fully back on track after the three defeats beforehand,” Ginter remarked following the triumph in Turkey. It was important to absorb the energy from the stadium and stand up to it. We did that very well, covered an enormous amount of ground, and defended compactly as a team.” Ginter hopes to mark his 200th Bundesliga appearance for Freiburg with a victory against an opponent that has caused the Breisgau club considerable difficulties in recent seasons. Freiburg have not defeated Union since November 2022. Ginter will be hoping that his team’s renewed momentum can help end that run as he prepares to reach another significant landmark in his lengthy Bundesliga career. “We’ve struggled at home against Union in recent years,” the defender acknowledged when speaking to Kicker. “We want to be successful once more before the international break.” GGFN  |  Peter Weis
